Frozen Semen Brokers

Has anyone ever used A1 Performance Sires or Global Equine Sires to purchase frozen semen?
What was your experience dealing with either of these brokers?
I know conception is never a guarantee, but did you get a resulting foal from the breeding?

Next year will be my first time going frozen and would like to get all the info I can.

Thanks

Ive used A1 several times, great service, no complaints and pregnancies with my mares.

ON AVERAGE, frozen breedings are successful about 50% of the time. Some stallions have 80+% success on the first insemination, while others are less than 10%. Likewise, some mares seem to get pregnant nearly every breeding while others never conceive from frozen. You should be able to ask the distributor how many pregnancies were achieved from any stallion that’s been around a few years.
Tying the conception rates to any particular distributor, as your question sort of implies, is a little sketchy IMO.

Ditto.
My friend bought from Global this year and was very happy with them.

Frozen semen is a gamblers game, no matter what. Stack the deck in your favor to start. Get a good, no great vet. Ask about conception rates and start with a fertile mare and PROVEN frozen semen.

I’ve used Global. Peace of mind in purchasing from Global as he will not bring in semen that does not work.

I really like Jens Richter (Global Equine Sires) for frozen semen. He’s European, but he’s lived and worked here in the horse industry for years so he knows both markets and the stallion owners over there respect him. I’ve asked him about stallions to get information beyond the same marketing blurb that is ubiquitous on the web. He calls the stallion owner/manager direct and gets the information that I need. And he can get the stallions that nobody else has. It certainly makes for an educated purchase decision rather than the shot in the dark that frozen semen purchases often feel like.

A funny story… I spoke to a broker about a stallion I was interested in that was stationed in Bavaria. She told me she only imported from Germany, Holland and France. Uh, ok…

I totally remember that. I’d still love to know where she thought Bavaria was.

Perhaps right next to the BMW plant?

I have purchased semen twice from Global Equine Sires. I highly recommend Jens; he is great to work with.

I too have used Global, and been pleased. Great communications. And interesting, well-priced semen offerings.

I just peeked at Global’s website, prompted by the accumulating good reviews. You were right about the interesting offerings! Flake really caught my eye in the under saddle video–I’ll be interested to see how he develops.
Thanks for sharing the good experiences.

Which broker was the one who came on these forums threatening to sue anyone who used a certain stallions semen purchased from anyone but them? Anyone else remember that fiasco?

I remember that - it was over the top, for sure. Hope I am not misspeaking but I want to say it was Performance Equine Sires, or something like that. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

I have used Superior Equine Sires and been VERY happy with Carol. She went out of her way to get information on the stallion required by my registry for foal registration. Both a friend and I got all the informtion we needed, and pregnancies from 2 different stallions from SES.

I’m also a big fan of Carol and SES. She’s also gone out of her way to promote domestic frozen as well.

I have used Carol at Superior Equine Sires and it was a fabulous experience; She shipped me semen that I needed at the last minute. I highly recommend her to anyone!

I have many breeder friends who have used Judy Yancey, Superior Equine, and/or A-1 Performance. While a few have reported a few issues here and there, for the most part, everyone has been pretty happy with the service they received.

I also really like Carol from SES. She has EXCELLENT customer service and will happily talk to you about your mares and any of the stallions. She has no hidden fees, either. Before I ever bought semen from Carol, I had used another broker who was absolutely horrible to work with, and downright nasty. Good customer service means a lot to me. I refuse to work with anyone who is unnecessarily rude to their paying customers.

Yes and no, a good and honest distributor will tell you what to expect from a certain sire. and I guess this is the question.

When I first start breeding I would have lost a lot of money trying to get a foal from a certain stallion . I had called his owner in Europe to inquire about his fertility rate and was told he was very good !!! Little did I know that this was a big lie and if wasn’t of Judy Yancey telling me the thruth I would have bought some from her as she was the broker. There was some pregnancy but she told me that I had to buy a lot of doses to try to have success… I didn’t try but surely appreciate her honesty.

Judy export to Canada once a year so if you pre-order it is the cheapest shipping fee I ever got.

So yes, a good broker will give you all the info he has and I have to say that Carol Austin was also straightforward about Nabab de rêve having only one pregnancy out of 40.

I dealt with Global Equine this year and I had a good experience. Maybe it took a bit longer than anticipated but it was not his fault, semen was coming from Europe so he didn’t have control until it came to the US.

What is very exciting is that Jenz is trying to have semen stored in Canada for next year! This would be great and so less expensive for us Canadian. I hope it will work out. He is very nice to deal with.
