frozen semen tank

Sorry for the barage of equipment questions! For those that do their own frozen semen breeding do you keep a charged tank at home? Or do you have the semen shipped close to breeding time and store it in the shipper until used?

If you have your own tank how big a tank do you have?

Does anyone have the type that can be used as both a dry shipper and liquid holding tank?

FWIW, most brokers and those that ship frozen semen have a limited amount of time that you may keep their tanks. We allow the recipient three days to have that tank turned around and shipped back to us.

If you are looking at a tank to keep for your own use, usually a 20 liter tank is adequate for most mare owners needs and have a decent holding time.

Good luck!

The problem I am coming across with having my own tank is filling it! Praxair that supplies my oxygen tanks at work can do it but I either have to take the tank to them or have then leave a “filling” tank at my place and I fill it myself. For some reason they cannot fill directly into my tank unless I take it to them!?!?

The only size “filling” tank they offer for rent is huge! How do you do it? Although that may not be a fair question as you undoubtedly will use MUCH more liquid nitrogen:) So maybe I am better off asking how some of your smaller clients do it?

Have you ever used these?

Praxair tends to be more expensive for filling than others ;). Find a welding supply company. they typically will be able to help you out and do so for a more reasonable rate. You can also check for a comapny such as Select Sires or ABS - both cattle semen distributors - they typically have routes they follow and will often accommodate small horse breeders.

<lol>…Yeah…I suspect even the tank they are offering to rent you is smaller than we use in a week ;).

With that said, it is why I suggested the small 20 liter tank. It fits in the seat of your car fairly easily and can be seat belted into place. It only needs to be filled about every 45 to 60 days ( I’m not comfortable waiting out as long as they say they can hold). And DIP YOUR TANK WEEKLY!!! Also store the tank on a piece of carpet or on a couple blocks of wood NOT on concrete. Concerete will cause the tank to corrode.

Haven’t had a need to ;). Good luck!

Bluehof,
I use this to top my tank off. Works really well and you do not have to move your bigger tank. It holds up to 4 liters.
