Fugly yearling

I don’t have any pix of my retired horse as a yearling. I bought him off Craigslist as a 3yo and he was a pretty mismatched mess at that time:

And here he is at 6:

Arabs tend to mature a bit slower than other breeds. That predictive thing about 3 days, 3 months, 3 years certainly wouldn’t have helped here!

The first pics I saw of this filly were so awful I told the breeder I was going out of town and couldn’t look at her. I didn’t even save the pics they were so bad. Pot bellied and looked like her neck tied into her knees! This was her when I brought her home at six months. I only took her because she was free LOL.

These two pics are her at five years old.

This is my other mare Bloo. Came from an auction for $50. My husband told me I was nuts for buying her. What are you going to DO with her?? I didn’t know, but she ended up showing 2nd level dressage, running 1D barrels, jumping and chasing cows like a pro. Best $50 I ever spent.

This is her as a long yearling:

This is her at 12:

Oh wow, he is gorge! I’d love to have something that looks just like him in the 16.2+ range.

I love these before and afters, some are truly remarkable!

I can contribute to the “neck fairy” and growing in to the head pics. My WB mare at about 28 months and again at 6 years. I used to call her Baby Giraffe, lol.

I’ve posted about mine before, and decided to take some pictures after grooming him today, and I regret it :joy: he’s fugly. He actually was a bit chonky in the last weeks, and thought, hm, this isn’t so bad. Now he’s doing some growing thing again, and looks less chonky and has no neck. His father and mother have great necks and thicker builds, and his half and full siblings do too, so his odds are good that the neck fairy will visit him eventually. I thought he was looking better until recently and…well, at least he has a nice mane to hide his sad looking neck on one side :joy:

He’ll be 2 in May. I see some 2 year olds in Spain (he’s a PRE) looking more mature than I think he will, but we’ll see. His sire produces a really consistent type, so I have faith. I also don’t want to over feed him going into spring because the grass here is rich, so going into spring chunky, with his breed/type, would not be ideal.

Well, i think hé will bé nice! It s Amazing how they change!! I go every month sée my filly and everytime i sée her she looks différent. Sometimes i look AT her and think that she s nice but one month After i Say to myself that she s terrible. It would bé fun to post in a couple of Years thé same horses to sée how they matured.

@drop_shot - thank you! He is 14h now as a coming 3 year old so I don’t think he’ll quite make 16.2 :stuck_out_tongue:
