Full Training / Consignment in Southern CA?

Hi all,

I’m looking for leads to a reputable eventing or H/J trainer for full training board with the option for consignment sale for my 2011 TB gelding in the SoCal area. I’m pregnant and facing bedrest and want to get him into a full training situation. He’s a great horse but I bought him as a resale project for myself anyway so I’d like option to sell him. Would like refs for southern CA to keep him close by, but will consider adjacent areas. Have seen prices for full care board with full training from 700-1900/month, hoping to end up in the mid-range. Thanks!

What you mean by “consignment sale”? If you mean getting a break in board/training rates out of sale proceeds? Few, if any, do that any more-takes too long to sell and costs too much to carry until it sells. Particularly with lower price range horses in expensive areas…like horses under 10k in areas where board is 1k and over.

If you mean have the trainer handle the sale and take a commission in addition to regular training board? Most do that for 10-15% of final sales price.

Lots of good people in Southern California - I take it your horse is not there now.

It’s going to be a hard go finding high quality full training for less than $1500 or so - and if you’re looking to sell it’s probably more important to choose a barn with a lot of showing and sales traffic to sell quickly (in fewer months) rather than to try to economize month by month. (I was paying more than that 10 years ago, yikes.)

If you have a preferred geography - San Diego? LA? OC? Inland empire? you might call that out, as well as a hint about the level of the horse - how high he’s jumping.

I would expect to pay a commission on the sale in addition to training/board, yes, that is standard. Less focused on cost, more interested in refs to trainers. The good ones I’ve found so far are full. Thanks.

Anywhere SoCal. Horse is green OTTB off track almost a year, WTC under saddle, started over crossrails, 16 bay gelding. <10k. Willing to go with a younger trainer building her business, doesn’t have to be a huge sales barn. Yes, lots of horse folks here - checking COTH so as to leave no stone unturned.

I ride at First Field Farm at B&B Stables in Cerritos and highly recommend them. They also have a few other young horses for sale so there are people coming through looking for that and they will pull them all out to show. Board is $410, including alfalfa and copious shavings. Training depends on package: four training services a week with grooming would be $800. Horse gets an activity (turnout, lunge, walk…) on non-training days, except Sunday. There is also a five services per week option. Here’s the website, with non-current prices: http://www.firstfieldfarm.com
