Fun class ideas for hunter trials

I’ve been tapped as a committee member for our hunter trials.

We want to have some fun classes.

I would like to come up with something better than the egg and spoon.

Any suggestions?

I personally would like to see the class where one takes a jump and grabs a glass of bubbly…but I have the feeling that won’t be allowed (heck, if my horse wasn’t NQR, I’d do it!)

drop top rail of jump and lead over

Set up a pen of poles have horses jump in and turn, then through; open and closegate; hand gallop across field, then hold hard and crack whip!

Here are some ideas that we have for a fun show/gymkhana at the state fair this year. I can’t take credit for them but I think they are very clever. Please feel free to borrow these…

Simon Says. Seriously. I beat my old trainer at two different ‘fun’ shows in Fla. in this class. Both times for a blue ribbon. All because her horse wouldn’t do a ‘cross-canter’ for the tie breaker. And mine couldn’t pick up the right lead if his life depended on it.

Picking up a glass of bubbly from a table (whilst mounted) and drinking before carrying on is a very popular inclusion in Hunter Trials over here. =) Also picking up a coat from a fence and putting it on - including doing up all the buttons!

I’m sure the bubbly would be allowable if there was a sparkling apple cider option!

great ideas…so we did put them into one idea…

the “expert” huntsman class…we are still thinking of all the questions…but the drinking part will be 'water offered, but you can supply your own" to pour and drink a stirrup cup…I won’t spill the beans on it as we picked some hilarious ideas!

lead line class for non riding spouses of hunt members. Members (on the ground) in formal attire, spouses (mounted) in helmets and whatever else they want. Flasks welcome. Whips optional.

Oh yeah

I’m in on that last one. And let’s make the attire of the mounted spouse…interesting. Must wear helmet and boots.

mudroom…Hilarious!

Has anyone ever heard of a class called “Gretna Green”?

When I was a kid on a pony, we had a local games club, and this was one of the classes. I loved this class because it had a jump in it. You had to run down, jump the jump (I think there may have been two jumps), run around a barrel but you had to stop and write “Gretna Green” on a piece of paper, then remount and run back over the jumps to the finish line.

I have no idea why we had to write Gretna Green instead of some other name, but that was it. I loved this class and always tried to win it! My pony was just the right height of the barrel to write, so I never had to get off her and saved a lot of time!

and the fun class results!

Our fun classes were a huge hit with both Jr. and Sr. riders!

Down to the last drop: riders had to hold a glass of water while riding…including walk, trot, canter, sitting trot, sitting extended trot, halt and back up…tie breaker had to jump. Won by a very determined Field master!

“expert huntsman” included walk, trot and counter canter, halting and keeping horse halted for whip crack, blowing hunt horn and pouring a stirrup cup on horseback (whipper in and field master used own flasks with giving judges samples)…winners…the youngest rider on the smallest pony as she immediately excuted a counter canter and made the best horn noise…2nd was also a Jr rider…and those in last. whipper i and field master as they couldn’t make a sound from the horn…sportmanship and the flying comments had our judge comment that she wants to judge more of the fun classes next year!..and we already have people plotting how to win the “non-riding” spouse lead line class. LOL

how about…

One local hunt up here…Bull Run I think…has/had a trotting race. Haven’t seen it exactly but as I understand it …there’s a timed course done at the trot or a group race and the fastest wins. If you break stride to a canter = you’re eliminated and have to drop out.

I second the “doing the gate” thing too.

I told him I will be back next year! C.J. is going to teach me and my silly Arab to jump this winter and we’ll be back for a rematch next fall!

The whole show was a lot of fun, but those last classes were the best! I’m very excited for next year!

Gretna Green is where you used to run away to to elope back in the day (in the UK)

Normally a Gretna Green race is
one person rides up to another, hauls them up behind them on the saddle and races back to the finish line.

Alternately you can also do it where one person rides up, jumps off, puts the other person on and leads them back.

Third alternate: ride there and back (over a jump?) holding hands.
