FUN Discovery...Ky Oaks related

So if you have been on this board for a LONG time, you might remember my horse “Unbridled Lad” that I bought and turned into a Steeplechaser. (Because I was an Assistant trainer and had to be with the string of the boss’ horses so bringing him with me and training was easier than leaving him behind)

So Lad was bred by the McNair’s of Stonerside Farm in KY long before Darley bought it. Well jumping forward 19 years or so, Darley had a bang up weekend winning both the Oaks and the Derby this past weekend. I am still friends on FB with the woman who helped to organize my visit to Stonerside MANY moons ago when I got to meet ALL of Lad’s family and his dam line and her daughters are very prestigious indeed and have continued to be.

So I congratulate Vicky on her post about the weekend and she tells me “Hey… Good Cheer is from your Lad’s family”

I blink. A Lot. So I am now laughing after doing some digging. On Friday, after the Oaks I am searching and searching for why I knew the mare “Wedding Toast” (Dam of Good Cheer) But I had looked in the wrong places for a connection. I found it after I saw Vicky’s response.

Sure enough… Wedding Toast and by extension Good Cheer are out of Lad’s mom’s family down the line.

Sheba Little - Lad’s mom by Known Fact produced

Mari’s Sheba - by Mari’ Book (Most famous for being the dam of Congaree, Lad’s Nephew) produced

Golden Sheba - by Coronado’s Quest produced

Wedding Toast - by Street Sense produced

Good Cheer - by Medaglia D’Oro!!!

Racehorse wise they were also valuable as runners for the most part:

Sheba Little: Earned $9k

Mari’s Sheba: Graded Stakes Placed, made $131k

Golden Sheba: Never raced

Wedding Toast: Multiple Graded Stakes Winner, made $1.4 million

Good Cheer: Multiple Graded Stakes Winner, Has made $1.275 million as of today.

So I’m hoping that Lad was shining some light down from above on his latest kick ass filly relation.

I miss him terribly but it’s so nice to see his family kicking on.

Ooh I love the Facebook pic of him galloping with what looks like a Pony Express set up. (Calendar photo for OTTB Connect)

Is this not him?

I think the horse galloping is gorgeous but, what caught my eye is the saddlebags. Made me think of the Pony Express riders.

Lol ok I’m catching up now. No. Not him. They occasionally have picked photos for being the horse of the month cover picture. Lad’s cover was many moons ago and if I recall was the picture that is his FB page cover pic of the head on view over the jump.

I just love nerding out on pedigrees! I’m just a fan when it comes to TBs, but from a young age their pedigrees fascinated me. I grew up near Saratoga, and my dad capitalized on my knowledge at the track

I am a Morgan person, and being a small breed, the connections you can find in their pedigrees are super interesting. When I bought my 5 yr old mare and went through her pedigree, I discovered that her grand-dam five generations back was actually a full sister to the main riding/driving horse of the family that owned my farm about 60 years ago. When my little mare is in our barn, she’s standing in the same aisle that her great-great-great-great-great uncle stood in all those years ago!

Very cool.

I’m so glad you pointed this out, too, because I totally missed this news. I have always had a deep appreciation for Mari’s Sheba and her family, because my “heart horse,” for lack of a better term, was also by Mari’s Book. He’s not a stallion that comes up in modern pedigrees much anymore. So even though it’s not the same family, I just love to see that sire line living on somewhere.

Plus I just love seeing these long established families continuing on!

He’s gorgeous!

He was. He was my first 100% heart horse. I owned him 14 years

:heart_eyes::heart_eyes: He is tremendous! And you’re looking pretty darn good too. I love how your hand and arm are in a straight line to the bit, yet he has all the head and neck freedom he needs.

So Lad used to have these “Balloon” type jumps. Just every once in a while.

Hands forward and slip the reins was the ONLY way to survive.

Fantastic riding by you, but that first pic when he’s coming toward the camera made me laugh so hard. What a wild jump!
