Fungal infection

My old horse got a weird fungal infection this week. She was molting like a bird, losing patches of hair all over her body. I consulted with my vet and she got a chlorhex bath, medications, etc. I found a clean blanket for her, although nothing that fits well long term.

My question: can I wash her old turn out sheet and put it back on her? What do I wash it with? Or do I put this still useable and functioning thing in the trash?

My horse seems fine now and I will get blood work done shortly. My horse is a super senior. It this fungal infection an indication of something more?

I would prepare a chorhexidine bath in a muck bucket or suitable tub for the turnout blanket. You could also use your washing machine tub. A 0.2 percent final concentration should be fine. Generic gallons of chlorhexidine are 2 percent, I believe. Put the blanket in and thoroughly soak the blanket. Personally I’d let it sit overnight, then rinse with clean water and dry in sunlight with the underside exposed to light. That should do the job.

Just thought to add as a disclaimer:

Would probably not use your washing machine tub if it drains into a septic tank. That’s a lot of antibacterial/antifungal solution to put in a septic tank.
