Fungus? Behind saddle. Help!

Hi all,

We have had my mare about 2 1/2 years now. We have noticed every spring she gets a little fungus looking stuff right behind where the saddle sits on her back. It came and went this spring like usual. We usually treat with the occasional anti bacterial shampoo, but we don’t go crazy.

Well, it’s June and I just clipped her and noticed it’s back! I’ve read the recent article(s) about how it’s a seasonal thing, but in the two years we have had her it’s never appeared again in June (usually gone by March), so I’m a little concerned.

It seems to bother her when I curry, but not brush. It seems a bit sore when I get my hand into her back, which is mostly why I am concerned.

Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated, thanks all in advance!

Antibacterial shampoo won’t work on fungus. If it’s truly a fungus, the best thing is to keep it dry so getting it wet by washing it repeatedly won’t help and might even make it worse. If you have to wash it, use an antifungal shampoo like nizoral. I also mix desitin with atheletes foot powder so zinc oxide paste and miconazole and apply it as often as possible. You can even clip the area so it reaches the fungus a little better. Hope this helps!

My horse every single year around the spring summer time gets fungus on his cannon bones, front and back. it totally eats away at his hair and I have even tried actual anti fungal ointments, with minimal relief. I feel like the past treatments I have tried takes a very very long time to see relief, and then causes so much irritation to surrounding area too. I tried Equiderma lotion and SWEAR by it. It is so gentle to his legs, where I feel like the fungus falls off on its own, but doesn’t irritate it like past treatments I have tried. I just apply a liberal amount to that area–I don’t necessarily massage it in or anything, but just apply it directly to the fungus–and leave it alone until the next day, and repeat until fungus is gone. Good luck!

Oh, yes! I have heard of Equiderma. Thank you! So glad to hear it helps with this!

I was trying to find before and after photos of my guy, but can’t find it on my phone. You can see a lot of the reviews on their site and Smartpak have mentioned fungus also. I’d say it’s worth a try for sure. It also seem like it has a little bit of an oily base so I feel like it stays relatively clean, as in dirt and crap doesn’t cake on to it when I look at it the next day. I felt like other things just always had dirty and stuff stick to it, that I had to cover it with a light wrap, which is counterproductive bc you don’t really want to cover fungus. Hope it works for you!

You could try dandruff shampoo too. It contains nizoral.
