Fungus, rain rot, what gives?

i’ll preface this by saying my horse was fully clipped a month ago (not for the first time), she does have cushings (so i know has a weaker immune system tho is not showing symptoms now), and does have sensitive skin issues (and is on a prescription supplement which usually works well)

i feel that it’s coincidental that this pops up on all four legs pretty much right after she’s been clipped. im not sure what it is but it looks awful and it doesn’t come right off. i washed her legs with AG silver clean scrub, but wanted to know what anyone thought this was…

Random guess based on time of year and the fact that it’s lower legs, but maybe mud fever? There are other names for it which I cannot immediately recall.

Yep, looks and acts (sensitive skin, post-clipping) like mud fever, aka scratches aka dew poisoning.

What’s her diet?

Is she on Prascend? What dose?

It looks like some sort of fungus. If it is, my concoction I SWEAR by is mixing desitin and athletes foot powder. I use the purple desitin with 40% zinc oxide because it’s stickier and I heat it up in the microwave until it’s soft and then I mix in the athlete’s foot powder. Let it sit and you get an antifungal topical that actually stays on.

Supplement vitamin A. 5 cc of cattle injectable, top dressed on feed, once a week for 3 weeks.

I coat wet legs in escalbur (sp?) for sheath cleaning - It melts the grunge away and you can gently scrape it off - then dry it -use hair dryer if necessary - wrap if possible - I like power with Silver in it or baby powder to dry it out

also maybe use some paste wormer to kill bacteria and keep out fly larva

Looks like what I call dew poisoning. I am not certain whether it is fungal or bacterial. I make a 50/50 mix of Listerine and baby oil, which I spray on the affected area(s). I remove the clumps of hair as they soften.
