FUNGUS

Fungus, rain rot, scratches… all the things we hate! There has been an outbreak of fungus at a stable I work at, I’ve been very careful not to bring it home to my own horses. I’ve been washing my hands, making sure everyone has their own halters and grooming supplies, etc. Now I just bought a horse from Oklahoma and she arrived with some sort of fungus. :uhoh: I gave her a iodine bath and bought her her own halter and grooming supplies, I am also using an antifungal ointment on her.

MY QUESTION IS: what is the best way to sanitize grooming supplies and halters!?!? I would rather not use bleach because it discolors everything. So here are my other options: iodine, dish soap, laundry detergent, or vinegar?

Scalding hot water and Dawn Dish soap.

If if your new horse is healthy, other than the skin conditions, buy some cow injectable Vitamin A&D at tractor supply.

ORALLY give your new horse 5CC mixed in with her feed and ten days later give her another 5CC’s.

A&D is fat soluble therefore stores in the liver — meaning this is an instance where more is not better, so don’t keep repeating:)

If you are opposed to bleach, try using alcohol. A 70% solution should kill things, and you can put it in a spray bottle and just spray things. Fungus loves dampness, so try immersing/spraying your things in 70% alcohol and letting them dry well in the sun. It is how we minimize bacterial and fungal spread in the lab, where we work with animals and cells (including human cells from human tissue). Listerine has alcohol and I heard can also kill things. Some people I know use it on their horses to treat fungal spots (like legs) or give baths. Commercial and veterinarian-dispensed antifungals often have ketoconazole at 1%…I would go for the drug rather than the “all natural” shampoos. Listerine or antifungals, leave it on for a while before rinsing off. Vinegar has a low pH and can kill many things, I’d soak things for a good 15 minutes in vinegar and then dry in the sun.

Good luck!! Congrats on your new horse!

Chlorhexidine 2% solution (aka Nolvasan, the blue disinfectant that has so many uses). We toss brushes and grooming tools into the washing machine, add chlorhexadine and detergent as normal, and run the cycle with hot water.

Dettol might work?
