Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

Head-desk

I knew she was an IDIOT…but this just confirms it!

God…poor horse!

As everyone is, I’m horrified by this whole thing, and find I can hardly read it anymore. That said, I will share an experience I had selling a horse many years ago. I had a very nice event horse who I put with a trainer to sell. Said trainer was also a good friend. A trusted person came along, and trainer agreed to let the horse out on a trial, which I went along with. After a week, the person who had the horse on trial called and said they wanted the horse, had had him vetted, he had a little problem they wanted to negotiate about, and shared with me “oh by the way, they had stopped by a horse show on the way home with my horse and entered him in the place of a horse they had entered who went lame, and were just in love with him”. I was just appalled, as that meant they had forged my signature as owner of the horse. I told them no, no negotiation and I was on my way to pick up the horse, that day. They wired me the full price that day, but I will never, ever send a horse out on a trial again.

What a nightmare. Glad this isn’t my problem

 I don’t know whether it’s appropriate to laugh at this or not, since I do feel awful for that girl and the poor horse, but damn.

Epona, good for you for having a chat with her about this. You probably did a good job by keeping your mouth shut for the most part up until this point, because now you don’t sound like a squeaky wheel. Maybe she’ll take your advice to heart this time.

And we’re sure the horse is in Florida, and not Nigeria???

ROFLMAO

Poor Matt! I hope he is on appropriate pain meds and feeling better.

And I hope the OPs friend is on her way down to FL to pick up the horse.

Let’s face it, all of the “We told you so-ing” in the world isn’t going to change what happened. The OPs friend sent the horse in “good faith.” Her good faith was misplaced. Not a huge shock to most thread readers/posters, but at the end of the day, a life lesson for the OPs friend.

I am speechless…jeez…come on…what does it take to see that the girl may NEVER see her money? and the rider may have a grand show horse for awhile?

I have bought horses on payments, took them on trial, and never, not once did I not do what I agreed to do. I even educated the SELLERS about insurance…took insurance out and had to tell the Sellers what it was for and not to take “just a binder” but gave them a copy of the policy! and never missed a payment on any horse.

I am one of those that believes implicitly in honesty and I think the buyer of this girl’s horse is not being honest with her. I think that perhaps they want to get the price down, or resell the horse, or are allowing all sorts of people to try this horse out in hopes of making a profit from their purchase.

I also feel that perhaps the buyers have no intentions of keeping this horse but are going to resell it (or perhaps already are in negotiations to do so).

I would definitely take the Florida Cothers up on the idea to go visit and demand a certified bank check immediately or load the horse up and have the Seller send a transport company to fetch the horse.

Maxxtrot is right - money can be wired within 15 minutes - I too have done that in buying a horse from halfway across the country. It cost me 15.00 and the lady had her cash in her account within minutes~!

Oy. This thread has been a very interesting read to say the least!
Your friend has gotten herself in quite the predicament and it seems that she is not willing to listen to you at all.
I’d just step back and let it to where it goes, as it seems she thinks she has everything under control.
Apparently she isn’t too worried about the well being of the poor gelding.
If this was my horse I would have picked him up myself. But then again he may not even be at the barn he’s supposed to be. Oh, and I would never let a horse off my property without full payment and bill of sale in hand.
I wouldn’t be surprised if your friend never sees her horse again or gets any money for him.
Live and learn.

The next time your friend talks to the potential buyer, have her say that she has a couple of good friends near (insert wherever the horse is supposed to be) and they want to come see him.

I would have had my truck and trailer hitched and on my way to Fla before they said goodby… I mean seriously… They asked to keep the horse until the 15th first she said NO! they said ok… and now they are back to the 15th again… because they think… scratch that …they KNOW the OP won’t come get the horse they just lied and said whatever it took to get it to Fla. Is there some big show on the 15th or something… or is that when the “other buyers” are coming with their check…:confused:

They’ve “supposedly” changed the horses name, sent Christmas cards, changed feed, changed supplement and they are STILL dragging their feet about paying because they’re not sure??? I mean why pay for something you already have for free???

It will be sooo easy for them to make that horse “vanish” into thin air.

If your friend has a check like she said she had she’d better at least try to cash it… if they balk… she can say it was the cost of the lease they have him on … now to pay the price on the horse… the FULL price…

Sorry your friend had to learn this lesson the hard way… was she at least willing to listen to you?? Had she thought of any of these things happening at all??? Does she now realize that it is a real possibility that she is out a horse AND money???

I must have missed the bit about the name change and the Christmas cards. I’d be more than miffed, and on my way down there. Totally ridiculous.

Horse is still there- kid is (are you ready for this?) “Pretty sure he’s the one, but they’re just not positive yet.”

However- they did send back Christmas pictures of kid and horse, complete with equine Santa hat, they’ve changed his name, and his feed and his supplement.

If I’m not mistaken, the friend gave them the deadline of the 20th to decide.
Here ya go … the nerve of some people…
Horse shipped at 5 am this morning. He has an overnight and should get there tomorrow.

FWIW, the seller did ask why the buyer wouldn’t fly up to see the horse-

“From what we’ve seen, we really think he’s exactly what we’re looking for, we don’t see a point in spending the money to travel to see him.”

They went on to explain that everything in Florida that is for sale are the same horses, season after season, just at a different barn because the nice horse won’t ever sell outside of one trainer and everyone else has what they want at the moment. They thought they needed to look outside the area to bring in “new blood” (if you will) to find something they like in their price range.

That said, I don’t know if I agree, I’ve never been to FL for the horse scene, nor do I have any concept of the hunter market down there.

I’m just reporting what the seller told me that the buyer said. Feel free to argue the point, but know that I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STATEMENT. Remember that my horse died four days ago and I’m not in the mood for bitchy, personal, snarky, snide, underhanded or just plain ugly comments made in my direction. I’m just trying to pass on the info for anyone interested.

They sent pictures of their barn- fantastically perfect, of course. Its their private barn, not the trainers barn.

I’ll keep you updated.
and this was on the 30th of November… the day he was shipped… that’s one heck of a trial period don’t ya think…

As I think another poster asked previously, have they even mentioned they have had the horse vetted yet? One can guess that he is going to have something really wrong with something (like heart murmur or some potentially bad chips that might require surgery in the future) and they are going to offer very little for him.

Joanne- I feel like thats what the next step is going to be. Something will come up on the films thats fairly common and they’ll lowball her big time.

I’m really hoping she doesn’t actually have the check in her hand and is just “not cashing it because they asked her not to.” She DID tell me she had the check, but I don’t know if she was just lying or what.

You know, from the beginning I warned her of a bunch of the stuff that could happen… she didn’t listen, wasn’t worried. Today I told her all the same things, and she was a little freaked out, but I still think shes just hoping for the best.

I’m calling right now to see if she talked to them this evening… ahhh… VM.

There you go back to teasing again…:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Its all in WHO you know!! Not saying that it would be a definite…but I might know some of the deputies in that county.

This is such an OBVIOUS case of someone taking advantage of a naive person…I agree to the poster that said the horse is probably going to be flipped!! (or something worse)

the horse isnt going to be there it went long time ago as soon asthey told her it changed it name—
seen it before-- did try to tell her-- it wont be there its long gone

you need to get hold of plod- fruad by decepetion and matey be aware your trinaercould be in on it as well-- as she knows who they are or surpose to this is has been arrange i think for a long time comming

they have worked her— as a mug

when i say worked its a con – a scam-- so they have worked her she anit gonna see no money and no horse–

heres a thought ok –

the matey wants to sell her horse-- so the trianer of your yard says yeap i know someone looking
so fixes with another trianer of whoe they can make a quick back hander-- and other trainer comes with bogus lcinets - ie dould be wife duaghter relation you dnot know as they surgest deposit for trail
in there main its a cheap horse gt easily on trainers recommendation

so sell the horse change it name send it over the state line but heres the scam
did it go to florida or another state line------------------------sold to a client straight off no mucking as after all the trianer 1 knows the horse well-- explains to bogus trianer 2 with freinds daughter or heresay- you have a no whoopeee you

so date is moved and moved again-- no returned call when matey rings — ho hum

trainer 1 say oooh ididnt know xyz of course she trys to ring same people
but if shes got a back hander whos to know her side is i put you in touch and you got paid xyz and therefore out of my hands – as to wether you sold the horse or not
no proof as to wether she was in on it from the begining—

am i suspicions always – dont trust no1 but me
so what to do – go to plod and tell them the horse is stolen-- 1st thing
ask whilse at plod to check said no out- as it could an empty buildings phone
or mobile -

then ask for internet plod for web addy to be check and emails – then ask for the gs tracking system to be checked in mobile phones as they can tell when that last call was made from
that will give you an indication of where the horse is and also if trianer 1 is lying
so get your arse down to plod there are thingd they can do but you have to riase what they can do so asked them

report here www.ic3.gov/ for emails addy or web addy for internet crime as in fraudulent ie stolen horse
