Gary Stevens- Retiring

Gary Stevens apparently suffered an accident this past weekend in a post parade. Doctors visits confirmed his vertebrae are now pushing up against his spinal cord. Today, Gary announced his retirement. What a life, what a career, an honorable human being

Just saw this on BH.

This one might be permanent.

He’s been a great jock and will be, IMO, sorely missed. He must be full of the memories of some of his greatest rides

I was always a big fan and wish him all the best in his retirement!!

Hope he gets into broadcasting. NBC needs some help on the races.

He did it for retirement #1… with NBC, TVG, and HRTV. Can’t see why he wouldn’t do it again! He was better at it than Jerry Bailey IIRC…

I’m sorry we won’t get to see him ride anymore, but he’ll have lots of good options within the industry to choose from going forward.

So sad…one of my favorite jockeys if not the favorite. He was pretty good in the movie SeaBiscuit. And I would love to see him again on TV.

He will be missed.

yep he was great! Definitely think he’ll be in demand. Glad he was able to retire while still largely verticle.

Best wishes & good luck, Gary!

There is a slide show on Bloodhorse that highlights his triumphs:

Great pics, including a couple of him on Winning Colors. I had forgotten what a magnificent beast she was.

I’m happy it wasn’t worse.
I hope we get to continue to see him around the racing scene.
He’s much more enjoyable to listen to than Jerry

will also miss seeing him ride, but hopefully we will see him as a commentator.

He’s also a good actor. He was awesome in Seabiscuit

Now I can’t bet the jockey.

I hope he heals well without surgery.
