I am probably late to the party, but was just pricing name brand Ulcer relief when I ran into Gastromax 3!! Available again for 30% less than the other stuff. Heck yeah.
less than what other stuff? Ulcergard? Definitely “other” because definitely not the same
I don’t know how they buffer or enteric coat it to get it through the stomach, so I have never opted to use it. Omeprazole is expensive poop filler if it can’t get past the acid.
Gastromax was taken off the market a while back due to Patent conflict with Ulcerguard. It is EXACTLY the same amount of Omeprazole and works the same (IMHO), and sale price is 30% less than UG.
One can purchase Omeprazole in many forms and it is relatively inexpensive. What makes UG expensive is the buffering agent/carrier. See post by joiedevie99 above.
Gastromax is considerably more expensive than other generic tubes/granules of Omeprazole available elsewhere.
I personally have not used Gastromax. I have used another generic that is an Omperazole sold on horspreerace.com. I’m not convinced that the generics work as well as Ulcergard/Gastrogard. While using the generic (at tube a day at shows) my horse was also getting smart gut ultra and still had a few ulcer flareups. I went back to using Ulcergard at shows and my mare gets sucralfate and still the smart gut ultra daily now; and no flareups for over a year.
I would suggest talking with your vet, it depends on the type of ulcers your horse has, on what product would be best to treat then with. Also the timing before/after a meal you give the omperazole etc. to you horse, makes a difference in its effectiveness as well.
This link is obviously somewhat self-serving but educational nonetheless. Be sure to check out the FAQ section too.
