Gate hinges on Utility Poles

I scored some LARGE used utility poles. Some are 16” in diameter. I figure I should never have to replace them in my lifetime.

My problem is the through-bolt gate hinges are not nearly long enough. I’m not a fan of the lag-type hinge.

I cant be the first with this problem - what have you done/seen others do?

no but we used to have blacksmiths who could make the hinges to order using round stock

We use larger pipe to hang our gates with flat hinges that bolt or weld.
We hammer the hinges so they fit around whatever circumference our pipe may be.

Many here use those poles and if set deep enough, they work great, there is no sag to them, even with heavy gates.
They buy the gates with flat hinges they then use big lag screws to hang them.

If you have the pin hinges that you need to have a hole to stick thru, make your hole all the way thru with a drill extender and the right sized bit.
Hardware stores sell all threaded rods of different sizes.
Buy one to extend the pin hinge and weld whatever you need to reach thru the diameter of that extra long post.

Most anyone in any shop, even a garage, can weld that for you.

OP, you could get threaded rod in long lengths… bend a 90 degree for the hanger of the gate. put nut and washer on both sides of the post to lock the hinge in place

Yes, we have done that also.
You do need to heat it so it bends without breaking.

At times we get next size rod, grind down the vertical hinge 2" to what fits so it is a smoother surface to turn on, then weld the first washer so it is steady, doesn’t slip into the bend.
