It’s a tight little group. As well as riding himself, Hester trains Dujardin and Hughes and part owns two of the horses listed. Lottie Fry is with the Van Olsts because Hester sent her to them. Hester purchased Valegro from the Van Olsts… Very influential figure, that Mr Hester.
Is there a reason she didn’t bring free style? Just seemed such an obvious choice.
The mare has “not maintained fitness”, whatever that might mean. Gio is highly rated by Dujardin. He is lacking experience but that little detail doesn’t usually concern his excellent rider. He has achieved good scores. The team might even have preferred him as a type better able to cope with the climate in Tokyo. Freestyle is also a comparatively young horse still, with immense potential, so maybe next time, in only 3 years.
