George Morris on the SS list

It’s not new, but came out after the first couple of days of uproar when people were still saying he’d been banned without an investigation and was “guilty until proven innocent.” Since then we learned the investigation lasted sometime between 18 months and 2 years, and that GM was notified at the outset.
We learned the investigators are trained experts (contrary to the beliefs of the ISWG group) and include former SVU and FBI investigators. We learned that the SS process does allow the accused to respond to the accusations and to provide supporting witnesses. We learned that the investigation was complete before the sanction was imposed. So lack of due process is it an issue, but I’ve yet to see any supporters walk back their claims on that count.

Cackling Yentas  Well, I’ve been called worse, that is for sure!

If being a Cacking Yenta means having a thoughtful, fact oriented, adult conversation and debate on a very difficult topic, then sign me up. Maybe we should all change out signatures to show our membership in this new group.

The GoFundMe for Safe Sport “Overhul” is at $3260 of a requested $25K. Anyone curious can see who has donated, though there are some who have chosen to remain anonymous.

Mandarino. Wasn’t that the woman that dropped the pony at the end of a syringe at Devon a few years ago?

Looks like no one has donated in the past two days to the GoFundMe. Interesting… maybe more people have calmed from their initial hysteria, and are actually thinking calmly and logically now. However, that GoFundMe description really says nothing about how the money would be used or exactly what they want changed, which I find odd.

I thought so.

There are a few new rules on the books, enacted by USEF since then, that her behavior made necessary.

That poor little pony.

“Committed to a FAIR SPORT judgement process for athletes. Due process (FAIR PROCESS) for both abused and abuser is the American way. Pursuing a change in the Safe Sport Center system as it stands now that puts all athletes at risk.

Change takes time and change takes money especially when the US Government is in charge of a flawed FAIR PROCESS system for athletes of all ages and levels!!

The purpose is simply for awareness and securing transparency in SS. The only way to get it is knocking on doors of politicians and sending letters etc. No one is trying to stop SS, which we feel is needed, but simply work at bettering the rules at play and secure more fairness.”

When I came back to FB a few years ago, the first thing I did was remove myself from every single group - except my elementary, High School and college school groups. So I am thankful that I haven’t had a single post or anything concerning GM or SS on my news feed, and haven’t had to deal with that. I can’t imagine what seeing all that hate and vitriol and craziness over and over does to victims of sexual abuse (in or out of the equestrian arena), but I’d be inclined to think it isn’t good and brings up a lot of emotions. So {{{hugs}}} to everyone who is effected in any way by this whole situation and its causing you distress and pain.

The thread seems much calmer now (and I know my heart rate is down) now that you-know-who has gotten the boot. I was really getting exasperated at her propaganda of nonsense. But just out of curiosity - what would prevent a booted person from just creating another account?

So they wanted $25,000. to knock on doors and fund letters to the U.S government to ask for “fairness”?

This is quite an embarrassment for the equestrian community. It could be explained away by complete naivete, except for the dubious distinction of some of the “donors”. They give an unpleasant taint to the “cause”.

I have avoided facebook completely. I participate here because the members are mostly intelligent and civil.

These last few weeks have been very difficult for many of us, most of whom expect to find civil discourse here. We can disagree, there is nothing wrong with that, but the weirdness has been very difficult to take as of late.

To answer your question, the Moderators are able to find banned posters who make new accounts in several ways. People do try to come back, but they are usually discovered, due either to the moderators or the members, recognizing their posting habits (they don’t change) and there are several methods of computer recognition as well.

Here’s hoping to better times, beginning now!

@Bogie My son is assistant director and youth coach at a large rowing club. He and his girlfriend both rowed in HS and college, she on a D1 NCAA team and she is a coach for one of the university teams in their city. When they were visiting earlier this month i quizzed them on their experience with Safe Sport. My son’s employer has a well defined set of rules/best practices for juniors similar to what you have related; his girlfriend remarked on the need for better enforcement at the college level. While DS was finishing his degree, he had also coached a high school team that a year or two previously had a coach prosecuted for a sexual relationship with a team member.

I am not sure why everyone claims that Safe Sport is a brand new thing… I assume it is because of the recent legislation at the federal level. US Rowing required all member organizations to adopt a Safe Sport plan effective in 2014. I was on the board of my rowing club at that point, and created the document that was adopted by the club from the template provided by US Rowing. While we have no junior rowing program, we often utilize HS age coxswains, and the policy clearly states that the provisions apply to adults as well, in that relationships between adult athletes and coaches are inappropriate due to the inherent imbalance of power.

In 2016 we were forced to deal with a situation where a married coach and a rower were alleged by the coach’s wife to be having an affair. Of course Mrs. Coach wanted the rower run out of the club, but Mr. Coach ended up getting fired over the situation. The whole thing was awful for everyone. I lost several friends, in part due to trying to deal with it in an impartial fashion, and I swear I lost years off my life from the stress of it all.

“2. The general federal statute of limitations for felonies stand for the proposition that the government can no longer file criminal charges for an offense once 5 years has passed. Why does this not apply to Safe Sport?”

Because Safe Sport is not part of the federal criminal justice system. Perhaps a portion of the gofundme money could be applied to reading lessons…

That’s an unfortunate situation. Did Mr. and Mrs. Coach split up after he was out of a job?
