I thought it was strange that a dressage rider and her attorney husband would get on youtube and do this.
I was thinking about this too. With Jimmy Williams they took away the trophy and the JW oval. I’m curious to see if WEF will rename the eq championship and what tryon will do with the ring’s name. It would sure speak volumes if neither did anything.
they should get ahead of this now. Things are not going back to what they were regardless.
I suggest they do what Tops did at Valkenswaard and name everything after great horses.
I am wondering if they jumped on the GM bandwagon early, and now don’t want to admit they acted before processing.
@ Gainer That was the story I was told when he first came down here - 9-10 years ago. It may have changed since then. I haven’t asked.
I suppose some don’t want to tell parents that they’ve been paying $900/clinic to be taught by a child molester? Or they are looking for favors in return for loyalty?
Lots of these people are clearly warped from living on the alternate reality that is the circuit. They lost their moral compass a long time ago. Many of these people have been falling all over themselves to get a crumb from GM for so long they can’t stop now.
He lies so often I suspect it’s hard to keep them all straight. Neither explanation is acceptable.
Y’all are asking way too much of the slow, unmyelinated, ruthlessly self-serving beast that is a corporation like Tryon.
It has been just four business days since the sh!t hit the fan. An organization like Tryon doesn’t move that fast. And when called to ask why they hadn’t moved faster in the direction that the morally outraged would want, they have to pretend they have a more substantive reason than “Uh… we were doing other things” or “We hadn’t thought about it until you called to ask us about it” or “Well, we want to see how the winds of Public Relations blow and it takes more than a week to lick our proverbial finger and stick it in the air.”
Remember that Jimmy Williams’ name wasn’t stripped from stuff within four business days of his defrocking. Furthermore, Morris is still alive and, kicking, and I’d argue, still way, way ensconced in the East Coast Establishment of the industry, so taking his name off stuff threatens to piss off more people whose patronage Tryon might need. Not the same as removing the name of a West Coast trainer who died in 1993.
MVP I was referencing why people stand with George rather than why names hadn’t been removed. I agree it’s a bit too soon to expect his name to be obliterated.
Watching US Gymnastics Championships. I thought LiLi Leungs comments about the job they have, as an organization, to do… very well said.
I think it is also people are afraid of their own past coming back to haunt them if SafeSport is allowed to continue, AND are worried Canada gets a similar program (coming soon). The reason I say this, is I am seeing people in my province, who don’t even compete in Hunters/Jumpers, speaking in favour of GM. I think they are rallying around this in hopes that their own association removes itself from Safesport (or something similar in Canada).
Is their a Facebook group for people who support Safesport and the victims it represents? Or just a group against it?
There are a number of people who Stand With George, but say it’s only about improving Safe Sport. No. Standing with george is standing with george. Hit SafeSport Overhaul if you want to improve Safe Sport. They are actually focused on the law, not on excusing the behavior of pedophiles.
Should I be astonished by the number of people who STILL say Constitution! Due Process! when they talk about the problems with safe sport? It’s always impressive to look like a uneducated fool when you are bitterly opposed to something.
And the number of times I see people equating SS (safe sport) with the ‘other’ SS is frankly appalling.
You’re right that states were slow to actually take laws against sodomy off the books. However, most states stopped enforcing laws against sodomy well before they actually removed the laws.
I would not be shocked if sodomy were still illegal in a couple of Southern states.
The man still has the right to an appeal. Let’s see what they do after his appeal fails.
And some people think that only SS couples practice "sodomy. Wrong.
Yup. The “other” SS, “star chamber”, the “Salem witch trials”, “McCarthyism”, etc etc
@fordtraktor has brought up some interesting points about a possible legal challenge to Safe Sport via the Sherman Act. It would amount to an unfair restriction of trade though, and it’s not a simple or easy case. I only grasp the basic theory behind this because of a background ion Macroeconomics, and studying the Sherman Act in detail in two different classes in terms of economic situations that gave rise to it.
But all these other INSANE comparisons to really ugly parts of history involving totalitarianism and human rights abuses, fascist governments, etc? This is absurd. People need to get a grip.
There actually was a part of me that was cynically wondering if the sheer difficulty of contemplating getting rid of every mention of him on stadiums and such was one of the reasons some people were so noisy and resistant. I’m even doing some soul-searching myself about what I should do with my copies of his books.
I can’t even make a comprehensive list, but I just want to thank every survivor in this thread who has shared their stories, whether of within the horse world or without, or even those who have simply suffered via witnessing abuse or working in an atmosphere where abuse was rife.
I see this is your first post. It’s not a good one.
“Being a homosexual” was never a crime. Engaging in sodomy was a crime in various states. I was an adult in the 70’s and while there was certainly disapproval of homosexuality from some sectors, neither law enforcement nor most adults tried to meddle with what two same sex adults (male or female) did in private. Even if it was still technically a crime.
So George was not committing a crime “simply by being alive”, even in 1968. Even if homosexual sex acts were illegal then, if he had kept all 10,000 partners of legal age, he would not have had any problem then, much less now.
This really has nothing to do with homosexuality. It has to do with underage sex partners.
- Please don’t abbreviate same sex as SS in this conversation.
- Back when sodomy was illegal, I assume that the law applied to heterosexual as well as homosexual couples.
So what is your point?
