Get well soon, Reed!

 Nowhere near your level of Skillz, but my TB had the same approach to obstacles.
He wanted to be babysat until a stride out, then he wanted to take the wheel. If I interfered, I got a stop.

Mind over Body.
My body still thinks I’m 30-something.
My brain says “Go right ahead & we’ll talk about it tomorrow” :expressionless:

I’m digressing from the point of the thread, but: that’s assuming it even is truly better for horses—our farrier is convinced it’s caused joint issues that he never used to see before it became so widespread. My trainer’s 5* horse hated working on it and she’d have to have pour pads in for dressage, cut them out for XC, and repour for SJ or he was miserable.

We’ve got a mix of rock dust and sand in our outdoor and the base was done properly so it’s a rare occasion that it remains too wet for us to ride for more than a day. I’d much rather have that than GGT (or similar), personally.

I can only speak anecdotally, but I can tell you that a lot of riders who had falls on that footing reached out to be saying the same thing. Basically, it’s like hitting concrete.

May your recovery be rapid and uneventful.

Reed, of course obey your doctor.

The last two times I fell off (at a walk) it was down into deep sand. Both times when I asked the doctors how long until I could ride again they told me 6 weeks, and would not budge on that in spite of my moans and yells of anguish (I wanted to get back into the saddle!).

The first time I was wearing a safety vest–2 broken ribs.

The second time I fell right on my left hip joint. I had a lot of pain but amazingly I did not break my hip (proven on X-rays). My ribs hurt like the dickens but I did not even crack a rib. I still HURT a whole bunch.

After 6 weeks I had to rebuild my muscle strength. I NEEDED help both mounting and dismounting.

A little hint, after the first time I could not dismount from the 18.2 hand horse I finally figured out if a person on the ground pressed my knee joint into the saddle I could dismount fine. It took a few months before I stopped needing this help after my falls.

Wow, that fall was nasty. There was not one bit of bounce in it at all. Just bang. Please be careful with your ribs. Broken ribs are so painful, and can be so dangerous. If something happens and you dislodge one of them you could end up with a punctured lung. Please be careful

Hopefully peanut got some body work after that. I’m a firm believer that 1000 pound animal can’t hit the ground that hard and not maybe have something out of whack or need a massage at least.

This is not at all an attempt to hijack the thread.

But Boyd Martin posted a series of photos of a recent fall he had on cross country. It’s pretty interesting to see his air vest inflate in stop motion, rather than normal speed or even slow motion.

That’s why all the jumpers wear air vest now.

Come down this way, and we will fight you for that statement.:grin:

Ugh, Reed, I just watched the video. It’s all the more galling that the two of you looked so good up until the end. Broken ribs are no joke–even bruised ones are awful, because it’s not like you can “rest” them by stopping breathing.

Like a lawn dart that missed the lawn and hit the driveway.

I’m a bit confused how it could be all over FB, but if it makes a few folks rethink their helmet choice or if they need to update, then YAY! That is the point of that post. We can be tough but we need to be smart.
