I am interested in replacing the divider in my 2h slant load trailer so that it can be kept open during travel to make it a stock trailer since my trailer is a little tight with the divider closed for my bigger horse. Is this something that is safe/possible to do, and if so, how do I go about getting the replacement divider and having it installed? I have a Trails West Adventure, and am located in California if anyone has recommendations on specific places to get work done! Here is the link to the new version of my trailer, though mine is from 2006: https://trailswesttrailers.com/trailers/horse/adventure/
I’m not sure if it’s even possible with this trailer, so any insight or help on where to start looking is appreciated!
Doesn’t the divider just swing over when you want to load?
I have a horse that leans when he travels alone. So when he is by himself I swing the divider over and use a chain to keep it in place.
Talk to a trailer manifacturing/repair type shop or guy. They will have an opinion about what is, or is not, possible, regarding trailer modifications.
Trade it for a straight load !
If I missed it reading the info in your link, if the dividers are aluminum it will be costly to have any welding done.
I’m going to sort of echo @Equibrit & say: why not trade for a stock trailer?
In my local (Midwest) market you could possibly trade even to a dealer or even walk with some cash.
I always just tied the divider open when needed, as Fittobetied said. Is your divider too long to do so (i.e. sticks out the back and can’t close the door)?
There are a few trailer parts stores that sell such items:
Aluminum Horse Trailer Divider, Adjustable | www.OrderTrailerParts.com
Is the divider not removable? In my stock combo, the divider just lifts right out. I have yet to actually use the trailer with the divider in place. It’s hard to tell from the photos on that website, but one of them seems to show the same sort of divider attachment as what my (Calico) trailer has. I tried to zoom and mark up the photo to show what I’m talking about here:
This was my thought. I regularly just removed the slant divider in my old trailer since the rear one was too long to closer the back door with it open.
I forgot about this thread and am getting around to responding to people’s help, sorry for the extremely belated responses!
It does swing over, however the divider is too long when open for the back door of the trailer to swing shut, and it is not adjustable unfortunately. The inside of the trailer also has a sticker that says “do not travel with divider in open position,” though I do know that many people do this if their trailer’s design allows.
Yes, it sticks out the back when open–what do you use to tie yours back with to make it secure? I’m just worried about it moving around and getting damaged (or worst case scenario, hitting my horse) if I drove with it open…
Unfortunately, in my older model, it is not easily removable–I can talk to my trailer shop about if they can take it out, but the way the mechanism works does not seem like it would be easy to move in and out on my own if I want to keep the flexibility of putting one or two horses in.
Mine was adjustable, the back half of it could slide in to make the divider smaller for when I wanted to tie the divider to the wall for hauling. The link in my first post is to an adjustable divider.
