We pasture-pro’d in the Fall and in some areas limed, and this spring we just finished liming another area. (approx 6 acres in pasture - 2 fields). This spring we are seeing ALOT of onion grass. Even in my yard. What’s the safest way to get rid of it? We can rotate if we need to but not convenient LOL. So prefer something we can put horses on after a few days of treatment. Thanks!
Basically good luck!
I’ve talked to the agronomist that I work with, and that was their response. I have it everywhere too, I’ve sprayed with glyphosate, and nothing happened. They suggested Trimec-2,4d, but I’m waiting to hear if I’m OK to spray that near the vineyards I’m right next to. I’m planning on spreading out my manure pile to try and get more organics into the soil, and maybe Calpril to reduce the acidity which I guess they love.
Onion grass isn’t really a grass so 2,4,d will control it. It is hardy, prolific, perennial weed and may require a couple of years to get rid of it.
Your Extension Office may have additional information you can use.

I doubt very much that 2-4-D will have any effect on it.Might knock it back but not kill it. It is not considered a “broad leaf” so it has a different “cell structure” then what 2-4-D was designed for. You could try spot spraying with some. About 1 1/2 oz of 2-4-D per gallon of water. See what happens. I know it doesn’t work very well on the variety that grows around here.
As I have posted in the past. Pasture Pro is nothing more then “weak” 2-4-D with a couple of other minor herbicides in it. The majority in jug is water. Says it right on the label, “other ingredients” It sell for 3-4 times then what “generic” 70%± 2-4-D costs for the same amount. People pay a lot more money for that pretty horse picture on the label.
As G said above, hardy and prolific. I had it in on my farm. But my paddocks, fields etc were large and it was not the dominate thing growing. I never bothered trying to get rid of it.
Do a “search” using “killing onion grass”. It should return with specific herbicides that will take care of it. Crossbow, Clarity may do the job. But you should get information on exactly what to use and how to go about it.
Onion/garlic grass reminds of my childhood visiting my grandparents. Drinking spring farm milk. Cows seem to like it because spring farm milk had that funky onion, garlic after taste. Which doesn’t compliment chocolate at all, lol. I can still remember the taste.
