Getting Started as an Exercise Rider in WA

Hi all, as the title suggests, I am interested in getting into working with thoroughbreds. The problem is, I have no idea how to get my foot in the door, or if this is even possible for me. I have limited experience with OTTBs, and absolutely no experience at all with racehorses or the racing industry. However, I have extensive experience as a dressage rider, and made the switch to eventing a year ago. I’ve done some internet searches and have also looked up some old threads on this topic here on this forum, and I don’t know how relevant my previous experience will be for exercise riding, as it seems to be a whole different ballgame from the sport/show horse world. The good news is that I am very brave, tough and absolutely willing to learn.

I’m looking to find a paying job in the horse world that will help develop me as a rider and as a more well rounded horsewoman. I am an aspiring event trainer in my early twenties. Any advice/tips/tough love is greatly appreciated!

Where are you in Washington? There are a few training farms around Seattle and Vancouver (the Washington Vancouver) that have taken in friends and taught them how to transition from being a performance-based rider to an exercise rider. If you don’t have any connections in the racing world, it may be easiest to find a farm near you and contact them with your background and your goals. But keep in mind that it probably won’t pay a whole lot.

gotpaints, I am in Seattle. Coming from the performance world, any pay is good pay to me!

Check out Pegasus in Redmond. If they aren’t looking for new riders, maybe they know someone who will be willing to take you on.

Look up home stretch Farm Penneys/coopers/fabulichs, ithe is a great place to get your feet wet.

A lot of trainers that winter here are at Donida Farm, might go check them out
