Getting started for the horseless?

I’m feeling kind of stuck in my riding lately-I’m a senior in college who’s spent the last 3 years in the IHSA doing eq and I am ready to just have FUN again on horseback! I’ve always been interested in hunting and was wondering what kind of opportunities there are for the horseless?

Other caveats: I have my own show clothes, but I understand there’s some additional requirements for most hunts. Also, I’ll probably only be in this area (Pittsburgh) for a year, so I wouldn’t be able to do more than like 1 or 2 seasons with any hunt I join.

Any suggestions? Is this possible?

Well, the only hunt really close to you is Sewickly. Rolling Rock, in Ligonier, will be a bit of a drive. Either way, I suggest contacting the hunt secretary of each and seeing if they can know of a member that might have extra/new horses that need to be hunted, or might know of someone who rents out hirelings. You don’t have to be a member to go hunting, you can pay a cap fee and cap to the maximum number permitted. But talk to the secretary and explain why you are calling.

yes, it is possible. and if you have show clothes, that is fine for capping, just get a plain white stock tie and plain stock pin.

hope you are able to make it happen - you will most likely have a blast.

I’ve been told to not even worry about the stock if you’re just trying it out for the first time–a ratcatcher is acceptable to most hunts for guests who’ve never hunted.

just my 2 sense!

Hey! Just contact the Saxonberg (sp? Saxonburg) Hunt which is just north of Pittsburgh I believe. Their Master is a terrific man who might be able to provide a ride for you too.

Do a search on this forum for starting hunting and you’ll find out all you need to know! Good luck!

It’s definitely possible. I’ve never owned a horse but got into hunting while in grad school. I couldn’t afford to join a club or hunt regularly, but I did end up capping a good number of times with different clubs, each time on a “rented” horse.

I would highly recommend, if you haven’t already, posting your inquiries to the Foxhunters Online (FOL) listserv. I hooked up with two trainers focusing on foxhunting that way. One time, I ended up meeting a member at a tack shop, and when I happened to mention that all the schoolies at my barn were leased out already, she graciously offered up her own horse to hunt! That’s how I found out how enthusiastic the hunt community can be about getting people into the sport if you show a genuine interest  By that, I mean interested beyond the “gallop-jump-drink” aspects of hunting (not to downplay their importance  ), like learning about the hounds, fox (or whatever the actual quarry is), and all those little things that make each club different. Good luck!
