Getting started in racehorse ownership...

Can anyone recommend good books or websites for individuals considering purchasing their first TB (or fraction thereof)?

Lightning in a Jar by Cot Campbell
The Backyard Racehorse by Janet Del Castillo
both excellent books.
DVD by the NTRA? or Bloodhorse publications? I think called “Owning Thoroughbreds” also very good.
Books available through amazon at a good deal used.

Might want to start by looking here:

Remember something in no uncertain terms- Most people who get involved in this lose money. That bears repeating so you know you’re not being lied to or hoodwinked
MOST PEOPLE WHO GET INVOLVED IN THIS LOSE MONEY!
Still interested? Good luck it can be a lot of fun too:)

Take a look at TOBA: Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders’ Assoc

http://www.toba.org/owner-education/

There are a slew of partnerships out there, but you really want to do your due diligence on what the costs are, who the members are, talk to others who have participated, etc. An approach of not looking at this as an investment with an expected return is more realistic. That said getting fleeced for little joy isn’t enviable either.

I think we’d all love to score with a horse like Gypsy Robin: a 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale for $27,000 who has since had a career of 9 starts 5-1-0 and earnings of $498,000  Including winning two Grade 2 races and taking second in a Grade 1. That just is almost off the charts with success and is the type of scenario I think any would-be owner would die to have.

The Racing Game that I linked to is a TOBA initiative.

Yep, its also link off the TOBA site. I wasn’t trying to contradict your post.

I didn’t think you were – just letting OP know that we were leading kind of to the same place with that one:)

Just got a notification from equibase. They have a new site they set up that the OP might find interesting. www.ownerview.com
Take a look:)

It’s been up all summer and offers some information for owners that has been hard to come by in the past such as trainer violations. It is improving all the time.

OwnerView is great, but wasn’t set up by Equibase (and it’s not that new) It’s a Jockey Club initiative.
