It’s getting very doggy smelling in my house. The dogs have their own futon in my office, between that and the carpet in the bedroom…I can’t seem to get rid of the smell.
I’ve tried Rug Doctor Pet Formula carpet cleaner, an enxyme cleaner, hypoallergenic cleaner, etc. I have a carpet cleaning machine, which also can be used on the futon.
What product really works?

I’ve how got the cat urine problem, but before I had that, I used something called Odoban. It did fine to get the dog smell from the house, but then they didn’t have their own piece of furniture to lay on. I would suggest putting a sheet or blanket over the futon so that can be washed easily. That may help a bit.
Odoban has several different cleaning options now, but I used something I coud put in my steam cleaner.

I’ve tried a sheet, a futon cover, wash it twice a week. The smell is in the futon. And the carpet.

I have a great solution to the problem of having a sufficiently sturdy and absorbent ‘pet throw’ to put on furniture. I go to Tuesday Morning and buy the thickest bathroom rugs I can find (very cheap!), and they keep smell and hair off of furniture quite well. And they are nice looking enough that I don’t hate having them on my furniture.
But dog smell is very persistent, it’s true…
what do you feed? dogs generally only have a noticable “doggy odor” if fed a low-quality, grain heavy diet. Dogs on meat-based high quality diets don’t have “doggy odor” to fight.
I gave up with first futon and started over. I got a pleather futon cover from something like FutonsRus.com…it looks surprisingly nice and doesnt stink yet. As to carpet, well, I’ve got only area rugs and spend huge bucks to send them to be cleaned about once every yr and a half. And I have lots of dog beds covering my rugs. Its a minefield of beds, but it helps a lot. And I can pile them in the closet when company comes.

If you have more than 1 dog, who isnt coiffed twice a month, who live on a farm and do dog things, your house will smell like dog, whatever they are fed. If you dont think so, have your sense of smell checked. Your friends are lying to you.
My herd loves to snack on anything found in the forest. I yell at the hubby not to let them roam while he is tinkering on his telescope cause I pay for it later.
I have used a few commercial products but found some to stain the fabric or discolor the carpet. I never heard of K.O.E. but will definitely give them a try.
In order to get the "raw smells to a minuimum I do several things.
I bath my crew once a month with a mild soap.
I also hose them off to remove the top layer of what ever they have managed to collect. It is just a quick rinse .
The paws are done before we head inside. I leave an old towel on the steps to collect any of the water or debris.
Where ever they lay has an easy washable throw that can be tossed in the wash.
I found using a combination of dawn dishwashing liquid, baking soda, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide rids the odors. I use tiny amounts of dawn to break down the oil the dog’s hair leaves. A vinegar rinse is then applied to the carpet. After I have passed the carpet machine over the area I then sprinkle the baking soda to let dry. Amazingly it wicks up things from the carpet. After it dries I vacuum the baking soda with my dyson. If the baking soda is brown after drying I do another dawn /vinegar wash .
THe hydrogen peroxide can discolor fabric or the carpet so a hidden test area would be needed.
I agree that the odors emitted depends on the dog food eaten.
A lot depends on the individual dog. Our greyhound hasn’t had a bath in over a year. She has ZERO odor - this is normal in her breed. Our min pin, which also has a short coat, has a a very slight odor which is manageable with a bath about every 2-3 months. My brother’s beagle has a pronounced doggie odor one day after his bath.
Two farm dogs (lab and rough collie), one hound (not a farm dog)he’s the couch potato. Lab is the smelliest. He gets a bath every other week, rinsed off if he goes running with my daughter. Collie gets a bath as needed. She doesn’t smell. I also use Show Sheen on them, which helps with dirt.
I feed TOTW and 4Health, both pretty good quality foods.
Agree w/ GallopHer that breed can contribute, and that beagles smell ‘doggy’ continually, baths or no.
I have two dogs that eat just about the same diet…they both have their own unique odors.
If you want a quick freshen up for carpets and you dont have the time or engery to really clean with a steam machine or something like that, Ive had good luck with Arm and Hammer carpet pet fresh deodorizer. Ive tried other brands and dont like them nearly as well as the A & H.
I’m allergic to something in the Arm & Hammer. Eyes water, nose runs, I sneeze like crazy…can’t smell the carpet, though.
I’ve used the cheap acrylic throws from Walmart or Target before to protect sofas and bedding from doggie smells. In fact I’ve used double layers too. I always have a few spares too, so I can throw one set in the washer and replace it so the furniture is protected. And for bigger areas I get the really cheap acrylic blankets at Walmart or Target, in twin or double, fold in half and that way I have two layers of protection, and they are a cheap way to protect the house.
Laura-If you’re that miserable then try the white vinegar and water mixed 50/50 and spray that on the rugs and furniture to neutralized odors.
I’m not miserable…it’s just doggy smelling. Once I get the smell out of the futon, I’ve bought a waterproof mattress pad. Hopefully that under the sheet will help. I’ve done throw rugs, blankets, comforters, they dig them out of the way to lie down.
However, the Arm & Hammer did make me miserable. I ended up shampooing every rug that I sprinkled it on. I sprinkle baking soda on the rugs when I vacuum…helps the vacuum cleaner smell OK too. I can’t use room deodorizers or sprays either. Sniff, sniff, sneeze, sneeze.
GallopHer has it - our greyhounds were always clean smelling. Love those dogs.
