Getting the stink out of pasture boots

My laminitic pony now wears boots most of the time (Easy Boot Cloud Therapeutics). They get wet inside since it’s snowing and raining now, and when I take them off to give her a break from them, they absolutely reek. I washed them with dish soap and rinsed and dried them and they still stink. Can I use Oxyclean Bleach? Vinegar? Baking Soda?

What do they smell like? Thrush? Wet hoof? Abcess type stink? What about gold bond powder and when they wont be used for awhile the whole thing like stripping towels with a run thru with vinegar n then bakin soda in a lingerie bag on delicate in the washer? Top shelf of the dishwasher by themselves with a cup of vinegar next to them and dry out on a sunny day or upside down in the dishrack? Although I think they will continue to smell in this weather. There is this too

The stink isn’t quite thrush – her frogs are soft but okay – but smells fungal. And pungent! With the snow – and yesterday it also rained, very weird for New England in late December – her hooves are perpetually wet inside the boots. The ice is very hard on her feet, so I am only letting her go barefoot for some hours out of the twenty-four.

I am going to try soaking in Oxy-clean bleach solution, and following with a vinegar rinse. I read about cleaning wetsuits and oxy is recommended. Same neoprene. I don’t have athlete’s foot powder but I will get some when Christmas has gone by.

I have two pairs so I can experiment as one is being cleaned/dried and the other is on.

Gold bond will not hurt and will absorb moisture. Might be worth sprinkling in before the boot goes on anyways just so she does not get thrush then or any moisture related uckiness.

You can also try cornstarch. Absorbs moisture and helps with odor. There is also a spray for athlete’s foot fungus that I used to use a lot when I had one that had to wear boots a lot.

Thanks! I am trying Gold Bond powder now, and also my husband has some ‘odor eater’ spray. Experimenting.

Boots worn that regularly should have some powder puffed in there daily, or twice a day, whether it’s regular cornstarch, Gold Bond, or something similar.

And, consider getting a 2nd pair so that each pair has 12-24 hours to air out before heading back onto feet.

I do have a second pair now, that’s always drying by the woodstove while the other one is on.
