Girth Recommendations?

I’ve just purchased an Oldenburg gelding with a HUGE shoulder and very forward girth groove. My saddle fits very well, but I’ve been struggling to find a girthing solution that works for him. A standard girth pulls the saddle into his shoulders, and the anatomical girth I’ve tried, TSF, also pulls forward and gives him galls. The only girth that I’ve found that works nicely for him is a KenTaur girth with a broad center medallion (link below) but it’s very nontraditional in appearance. The new Professional’s Choice girth has a similar appearance, but I was wondering if anyone knows of an all-leather girth with the same shape?

The EquiFit Anatomical Jumper Girth is what I use now. If you’re showing hunters, you can always remove the Dee rings on the sides of the girth and still have a relatively normal appearance. The outside of the girth is leather but the underside is removable EquiFit material and it feels like a cloud :love-struck:

ETA: I saw the new Professionals Choice girth in person and was not impressed with the quality. For a bit more money, the EquiFit is MUCH nicer IMO

The shoulder relief girth by total saddle fit. Brings the saddle back off the shoulder and is a beautiful girth at a very reasonable price. They do run a bit on the small side so if your horse is between sizes I’d order a size up

Edit:
I should probably read the entire post before commenting…weird that you have that problem with TSF. Have you tried using a non slip pad under your saddle? I use the acavallo gel pad under my saddle. I love that it keeps it from moving and also provides additional shock absorption

Looking at it, I suspect there are some design flaws with TSF girth. I know it works for some horses, but definitely not all horses. I generally use anatomic girths; my favorites have been the Dover version, the Pessoa version (not sure if either of those is still made), and the County Logic (but definitely buy new… substandard care makes them look like crap). I also don’t love the design of the Butet anatomic girth (I think it might have some of the same flaws as the TSF), but it might work for you. I think it’s on sale (like, serious sale) - call Beval.

In lieu of the Kentaur or Professional’s Choice girth, I would be inclined to try either the Devoucoux or Antares girths of a similar style. They’re not quite the same, but might work:

I think the leather on the EquiFit girths is crap.

World Equestrian Brands also has some girth options which might work, but they might also only be Mattes (I don’t recall for sure), so if you’re not into sheepskin, that would be out. Check to be sure.

Neither of these look like anatomical girths to me. The center piece just looks bigger to accommodate the snap???

I believe they are now using a different leather in their newer girths compared to what they originally started with several years ago. I am pleased with the leather quality of mine

OP: EquiFit also makes an anatomical hunter girth but it doesn’t have the wide middle section that your new horse seems to prefer

I haven’t tried them, but what about one of the Mattes girths? I think they have 3 different anatomical designs.

Actually, OP, the girth you are presently using–the one your horse likes–seems fine to me. It doesn’t have that crazy big center panel, and I doubt it would stick out or look odd, especially if you have it in brown.

They’re not, and I didn’t say they were. OP asked for all-leather alternatives to the Kentaur girth currently in use; the shape of the girths I linked to is similar and might work for the OP.

I love my M. Toulouse anatomical girth! It’s lovely, fits well and the price was right.

Sorry I shouldn’t have directed that at you. It was more of a general frustration when people and stores call girths anatomical when they aren’t (you didn’t do this).

The OP says that a regular girth pulls the saddle forward on to the shoulder but the KenTaur doesn’t? The Kentaur might disperse pressure along the sternum but there’s nothing anatomic about the shape so I don’t understand how it wouldn’t pull the saddle the same way as a traditional girth. Perhaps it’s more to do with the material vs the shape.

If that girth that you are using works, I would go with it. I had one horse that every girth I tried rubbed, and didn’t fit right–for that horse a balding girth solved the problem.

This might be an option. The outside is actually PVC not leather but it looks really nice you honestly can’t tell this difference from a distance. Its much nicer than other types of non leather girths

A slightly more simple version of the one you’re using?
