Girths...long, string, or anatomical?

Pony doesn’t like her dressage girth. It is straight, fleece, with elastic. I’m wondering what to try next… She doesn’t have a forward girth groove or any problems with the saddle rolling or moving forward toward her shoulders. I think her girth could be longer and I’m wondering about using a long girth with long billets, is that possible ? (I think mostly she doesn’t like where the buckles are placed…for now I’m riding her in my jump saddle with no girth complaints.) Or a longer girth that is string (but wouldn’t the buckles still be bothersome)? How do you know if an anatomical girth would be the right option?

Thanks!

What kind of girth do you use with your jumping saddle? Mine personally doesn’t like fleece girths because they don’t seem to offer the same strength as her leather girth. If it’s the buckle placement could you try just getting a size up?

My ponies tend to like short girths to be longer than they’re “supposed” to be. Mine come almost to the flap of my saddle on both sides.

Is it hitting her elbow or the nerve that runs along that area (sorry, can’t recall the name of it!)?

Maybe a slightly longer one if you have the billet holes for it, and/or something thinner with less bulk under the elbow, like a mohair girth?

You technically could use a long girth, depending on how your billets are mounted - obviously a point billet or a V billet isn’t going to girth up high enough for that to work, but I’ve seen standard billets with holes for both lengths. Of course, that will create a pretty big bulk under your calf, and a huge amount of excess billet unless you want to cut them down (not recommended if you may ever want to sell your saddle!).

My smaller horse is like this. I use a Mattes anatomical/one that has elbow room. I would just size up because the buckles can certainly bother a horse. Anatomical is mostly to create elbow/shoulder room and possibly accommodate a forward girth groove.

My horses do not do well with elastic or fleece. That really cuts down on options. I tried the TSF girth, it eventually gave my horse rubs and she hates it! I have a “humane” type girth with no elastic, that seems best. I also have a neoprene girth without elastic which is acceptable. Horze makes a cheap nylon one without elastic also.
I would like to try string, but the only one I could find didn’t have keepers so I returned it.

Yup… my guy does not like short girths. I believe, because of the way his ribs are sprung… they tend to come below the edge of the rib and pull them “in” for lack of a better description. The long girth allows the bottom of the rib cage more openness and pulls the saddle down only from the top… not the sides too. Anyway… yes… long mohair string girth on my Stubben is what makes him happy.

My princess & the pea hated the anatomical girth I bought her. (It was the synthetic TSF girth) I mean, bolting and broncing to the point I thought maybe my saddle tree was broken to elicit such a strong response. Nope, it was just the girth. I assumed it was the shape and how the pressure was distributed… but could it have been the buckles?

My “usual” short girth is fleece and elastic and she goes fine in it, but it is about 2" shorter than I would ideally like. She also has a forward girth groove and the saddle and girth creep forward, putting the saddle on her shoulder.

I’ve been debating trying a string girth… although I really wish there were more black ones out there…

Not cheap, but my horses have all really liked my stubben fancy girth with the elastic loops. The equisoft? not sure what it’s called. But I would buy another one in a second given how much all my horses have liked this one.

If your girth doesn’t have material underneath the buckles (between the buckles and skin) I would try that. For instance: http://www.dressageextensions.com/kavalkade-klimatex-girth/p/27933/ or http://www.dressageextensions.com/diplomat-leather-girth/p/2727/

Same here on all three of my guys. I don’t see how a short girth is supposed to be comfortable for them.

it does have fleece between the buckles and her skin.

I saw riding warehouse has a string girth with buckle backing…has anyone tried that?

Yes, I bought the mohair string girth from them and my horse loves it. It is the only one that hasn’t rubbed her - she is very sensitive/thin skinned and has an extremely forward girth groove. The buckle backing is good, even has a D ring for my breastplate when jumping, and keeper to keep things neat and tidy. I can barely notice the white color (I wish they came in black!), although it helps that my horse is grey!

Be careful about string girths. Certain materials will stretch and can become matted. I have been happiest with a standard nylon string.

I got that string girth for my Luso. He has a very forward girth groove and a very long shoulder. My very classical teacher noted that the SRS uses this kind of girth. Unfortunately, the material behind the buckle causes rubs on both sides. Maybe a longer one would do the trick. Sigh.

I have used a mohair dressage girth with success. The one from Riding Warehouse. My mare rubs REAL bad. Big ROM.
But ultimatley the mohair isn’t quite stable enough fom her porky hippo shape.
I found a Fairfax narrow 30in on ebay for 200 bucks!!
so far, so good.
I also apply bag balm to her armpitts.

It does sound like your girths are small. My horses are 16h and 16.2h and go in 30/32" girths. The buckles are up past their elbows.

I do not find that sensitive horses always like the fleece better. The fleece works to prevent sores. But if that isn’t the problem, fleece is slippery and you wind up snugging it up extra tight to keep the saddle in place. Maybe try leather with a really wide band??? - But really the only way to know what she likes is to try them-- gets expensive if you don’t have friends with horses the same size to borrow from.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone.

For those who want a black string girth I found this https://www.windridertack.com/store/p26/Endurance_English_Black_Mohair_Girth_.html

Mohair string. It’s the only thing other than an old school Balding girth that fits my chunky morgan/haflinger without pinching or rubbing. His girth groove is under his elbows, so anything too thick or stiff rubs and pinches. He HATES fuzzy girths, neoprene makes him raw, not a fan of any of the shaped girths I’ve tried either. Tried a lovely mohair string girth and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. I just make sure to hang it to dry and then stretch it by hand periodically throughout the drying process so it doesn’t shrink, and wash in a pillowcase or mesh bag on delicate in cold water with baby shampoo.

I’ve tried other string materials and neither I, nor pony, like them. Mohair is soft, easy to wash, breathable, and has slight natural elasticity. I have shown in it (his is brown to match our saddles and his coat, but you can find them in black and white too) but I do keep two Balding girths on hand (one in “fluffy” size and one in “regular” size, since this style of girth has no elastic or stretch whatsoever) for if we do any showing above schooling or “discovery” (our province’s step below bronze shows but about schooling shows and fairs), or if I’m schooling any sort of water obstacles because the mohair does take some time to dry properly, and nobody likes to use a wet girth!

My western cinch is a “roper” style, mohair cinch as well, and the wider middle really helps hold the saddle steadier than a regular straight cinch too.

Update. . .

I think what was bothering her was the pressure of the buckles even though her fleece girth had fleece backing behind the buckles. I put Mac’s girth on her on Saturday and had no complaints. . .his girth is also fleece, but thicker so that the buckles’ pressure isn’t felt as much.

I thought that a string girth wouldn’t solve the buckle-feeling problem.

With that info in mind, and with Mac’s girth in hand, I went girth shopping at three places over the weekend so I could feel them in person. There’s a very slim selection here, but the one I ended up getting is a Nunn Finer Passage. It is leather with elastic ends, very padded, and the padded leather extends past the buckles. In the store I could feel no buckle pressure through the leather. It is gently shaped. I also got one size bigger than her other one.

Tried it yesterday with no complaints … will try again today to see if I have the same result.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!
