Giving Previcox and Bute-Less?

Is it OK to give Previcox and Bute-less together? I asked my vet and he said he wasn’t sure Bute-less would be effective, but didn’t speak to any gastric effects. I just get concerned because I would hate to induce any side effects due to my carelessness. Anyone have experience?

I have mixed something similar to Bute-Less (Uckele Devil’s Claw Plus) and Previcox, with the okay of my vet. We only used the Previcox for 10-14 days and then stuck with the supplement. It was for an acute issue on a horse that is retired. (Somehow he banged his hock and stifle, probably playing with his pony). I didn’t notice any problems from the mixture at all. . .and he was back to his mischievous self in 4 or 5 days. This guy has a sensitive stomach and will stop eating if he feels bad, and he didn’t seem bothered by it at all.

I would think you would be fine to give both together, since the Bute-Less is more of a herbal supplement that you can give long term.

When my horse needs it, he gets Previcox. And I routinely feed him his custom blend of T.H.E. Muscles mass with joint and inflammatory support.

What is your theory in needing to give both the Previcoxx and what is primarily Devils Claw? What does one do the other does not? They both are used as pain killers for arthritis and, anecdotally, they both work. So why both?

Oh, herbs are drugs too and interactions should always be a concern since there is absolutely no proper research in interactions…or, actually, effect and side effects, in horses.

I do not have the information to back it up but I have read a few different places not to mix Previcox with herbal supplements, especially Devils Claw. I found this when I was researching last summer… I will see if I can find it again.

FWIW, my guy is doing great on 1/2 a Previcox 1x a day with the Smartpak Senior- Herb Free.

I had heard not to mix them as well, but haven’t seen any information. If you could find it riverrunak, I would really appreciate it! I was concerned about their interaction, couldn’t find any literature on it, and when I asked my vet, he had no opinion.

My theory giving him the Previcox+ Bute Less was to bump up his NSAIDs while he is rehabbing through a soft tissue injury and making the transition back onto pasture board, and replace whatever he was getting through SmartPak Senior Combo.

My guy is on 1/4 tab of Previcox 1x a day, was on the SmartPak Senior Combo which I didn’t like for hoof supplement purposes, so I swapped him to SmartFlex III and his old hoof supplement) and wanted some anti-inflammatory on board similar to what was in the Senior Combo. I’m just nervous about GI effects, so I may re-evaluate once he finishes this month’s SmartPak with the Bute Less.

FYI guys devil’s claw can cause ulcers just as well as bute can, it’s still an NSAID.

Yes on the first part, but not because it’s “still an NSAID.” It works similarly, but its not exactly the same.
