Glaucoma in Cats (Cat with One Dilated Pupil)

I’ve already scheduled an appointment with the vet but that’s not for a few hours so while I’m sitting here worrying I thought I’d ask the COTH community for their opinion: what could be causing my otherwise normal cat to have an eye that has a dilated pupil? He’s not unsteady or acting like he’s in pain, his behavior is normal. Just the dilated pupil. Thoughts?

It’s called anisocoria and can have a lot of causes. Glad to head you’re getting her in today as waiting isn’t the best approach for this.

Here’s a link with good reading for you (when they say have her seen right away your current appointment is fine)

Thanks. I changed the thread title following the appointment hoping some people will chime in with their experiences on glaucoma in cats.

So the vet says he has glaucoma. She numbed his eyes and did readings of the pressure and said it is high in both eyes. She also said that when she pushes on his facial cavity around the eyes, she feels more resistance than what is normal in the area around the dilated pupil. She recommends an eye specialist for the glaucoma and possibly an MRI to make sure there is not a tumor behind the eye. We were sent home with a prescription for eye drops and a referral to a specialist.

My cat is only 11, and I’m pretty scared for him. He doesn’t act like the eye or his head is bothering him at all…if that pupil wasn’t dilated, I wouldn’t have known anything was wrong. Has anyone been thru something like this? How manageable is glaucoma in a cat?

No experience to share, but wanted to say I’m hoping for the best for your kitty!

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

A dear friend had a cat develop glaucoma unilaterally. They treated it for several months until Pookie (bless her heart for that name) started showing signs of discomfort and then they removed the eye. She lived quite happily after that until signs of a tumor became obvious and was then put to sleep when they could no longer manage her comfort.

I volunteer with a cat rescue and one-eyed cats do just fine. I currently have a blind foster who’s been in my house for 6 months. I’m happy to talk at length (pm me) about the adjustments I’ve made for Pat.

If it were me, I’d want to know if a mass was lurking. If so, then you may want to weigh your options a bit differently, but assuming it is solely glaucoma, your cat has a wonderful chance at a long and happy life.
