Glove deodorizing

What are the current favorite ways to deodorize our fabric riding goods that don’t get washed after every use? I use an alcohol-based linen spray, but it is not enough to keep the sweat funk at bay, so for the sake of my barnmates, I’m searching for some new options that also don’t require me to buy extra pairs of gloves to wash the set after every ride.

(I have POTS, so the sweat is real and can’t be helped - so something to deal with the after effects is needed)

I just cycle through multiple pairs until they all stand up on their own, then throw them all in the washer.

I also have multiple pairs. I wash mine pretty regularly, along with my normal washing loads, and just swop out for a fresh pair.

My gloves smell like the devil’s butthole really quickly. I don’t know why. My hat never smells, and neither do any of my shoes (whether leather or synthetic). Just my gloves.

Another person who just has multiple pairs of gloves so there is a pair to wear when one is being washed.

I look at it this way, it is an excuse to buy some fun new riding gloves. There are so many fun colors and designs now, might as well enjoy your schooling riding gloves.

And you don’t have to worry about anyone “borrowing” your gloves either

I have a 5 qt grain bucket that’s filled up with water by my tack station. Every now and then I wash my gloves in there with a little squirt of Ivory/Dawn. Works well and IMO extends the life of them, mine always get chewed up in the wash.

Once, I asked my SO to get my gloves that live in the trailer; they don’t always get such preferential treatment since I’m often off property when I use them. He handed them over to me with a sour look on his face and goes “this smell has a texture to it.” :joy: :

I cycle through gloves so they can dry.

I don’t “wash” as mine are all leather, I’ve found putting cornstarch on my hands prior to riding and cleaning with sheepskin cleaner, letting dry, and then putting on the gloves and rubbing some leather conditioner/balm all over keeps the smells at bay. I only wash them 2-3x a year and they last longer.

It sounds like a lot of folks just cycle through gloves until they’re all funky enough or have a cleaning cycle. I wish I didn’t have expensive (for me) taste in gloves!

Sweaty gloves are dirty, salty, and oily. Having 3 pair should be enough to always have a washed, dry pair.

I used to wash the same way when I had all-leather gloves, but using Melp or PePeDe instead of regular detergent.

I’d try something like this aimed at the hunting crowd to eliminate scent - get a small bin or bag and toss it in with your gloves.

Scent Slammer Portable Ozone Generator

That’s a thought! My dad is the world’s worst hunter* so he might have something like this already

*15+ years of hunting and the only thing he’s killed is with his truck coming home from church

I got an essential oil spray from Amazon and give gloves, boots, and helmet all a spritz after riding. I also store the gloves with a charcoal odor eating sachet. Those seem to help but ultimately they will have get washed.

Interesting option;

I never realized sweaty gloves were an issue. Back in the day when I wore riding gloves I just pulled them on and got on with business. Maybe after doing stalls my sense of smell just registered the scent of horse?
