Glove stink

I am sure this has been asked before, but I am so disgusted by the smell of my gloves. Does anyone have a secret for this? I washed them out and they’re drying in the sun, but the smell still creeps up.

Wash them more frequently? Buy new ones? I can’t say I’ve ever had any that smelled so bad one round through the washer didn’t take care of it. Did you wash them by hand?

Are they synthetic? I spray mine with rubbing alcohol (and my helmet) when they get sweaty in the summer and then hang them up to dry. I no longer store them in my helmet bag and make sure they have plenty of airflow to dry between rides. I’ll also throw them in the washing machine a few times a year.

Sweaty, stinky hands/gloves is why I no longer use leather gloves in the summer.

I’ve got the same problem.

I wash the cloth ones, but I don’t want to throw my Roeckls into the washing machine!!! I bought Roeckls thinking they wouldn’t get smelly.

I’ve hand washed them in dish soap and those little scent fresh beads that are for the washing machine. It helps only until it’s hot as hell and I sweat profusely in them again…

I’ve washed my Roeckls, no issue. For stink, I always add a “glug” (scientific term) of apple cider vinegar to my wash. Between my horse life and a teenage boy… I do it with every laundry load. It really helps!

The black dye doesn’t pour out @Jo ? When I hand wash them, I see the black dye come out… I guess if I wash them on gentle with like colors…

I have a variety of black cloth gloves, and I wash them fairly frequently. I put them in a mesh laundry bag and toss them in with the regular dark wash (warm water, which is lukewarm at best). They get a musty smell after using them but I’ve never had them really stink (like boots can!). I handwash my black leather gloves periodically, and they do leak a lot of dye.

I suppose my attitude to barn smells is, I hate actual real stink but figure musty/dusty/old just comes with the territory. If I notice the smell at the barn it is a bad smell. If I don’t notice the smell at the barn, only when I get home or to the mall  then it isn’t really a serious smell

I wash my heritage gloves in the washing machine with regular detergent and oxyclean and they always come out smelling nice. I usually throw them in with polos and ear bonnets and all that. I have found that regular detergent alone will not get that stink out.

Head & Shoulders shampoo comes in an Old Spice line. Both the “swagger” and “sport” scents make your horse and your stinky gloves smell much better. LOL

Every day, after riding, while washing my horse on the wash rack, I just take off my gloves and hand-wash them right there with whatever soap happens to be out there. I do this whether they are leather, cloth or synthetic. I rinse them out well with the hose, squeeze them in a towel, and set them in the sun to dry while I graze my horse. Clean gloves every day! I do the same with my helmet liner.

No I just washed mine yesterday - came out fine! Still slightly smelly but significantly better! I wash them on delicate

I’m pretty sure the root of my stinky glove problem is a) feeding treats from a gloved hand to a slobbery horse, and b) patting/scratching said horse’s neck as a “good job” signal.

I haven’t had gloves get stinky when I make sure to take one off before feeding treats, given how generous my horse is with saliva, and refrain from patting the sweatiest parts of the neck.

Other than that I buy Roeckl Chesters or similar and wash them in a delicates mesh bag in the washing machine periodically with woolite, and resign myself to buying 1-2 pairs/year as they wear out. ETA: I wash all laundry with cold water, so gloves get the same treatment.

Way easier to manage than helmet funk!
