Gloves to use when handling summer sore meds?

The summer salve is IIRC:

Vaseline based, DMSO. Dex, Citronella, a dewormer and something else maybe.

I’ve been using vinyl exam gloves.

I still manage to get the concoction on my hands and other places on my skin.

I’m very sick with Lyme Disease - have been much worse lately - and wondered - could the salve be causing me problems?

Should I be using different gloves?
(in addition to being more careful of coming into direct contact with it ).

TIA.

If you’re very worried, you may wish to use rubber dishwashing gloves.

I seem to recall that either vinyl or latex won’t stand up to DMSO. Sorry not more help beyond that.

Feel better soon. Lyme disease sucks.

Vinyl gloves are not recommended with dmso. Take a look at this glove compatibility chart:

https://www.coleparmer.com/safety-glove-chemical-compatibility

(Select DMSO from the drop down list)

Nitrile, neoprene and latex are all good. Ones that go to the elbow would be most protective. Or is there someone else who can apply?

Hope you feel better soon, and that your horse improves!

Anytime I use DMSO I use multiple layers of gloves. Forget which kind but they’re blue from the drug store. I normally use two or three layers. Also I usually get a plastic spoon or similar to mix and if possible apply. That way the stuff doesn’t even on the gloves. Best of wishes.

Thanks so much.

Now I don’t want to use the salve.
The sore was almost healed - then another round of bad flies - it’s bad again.

I read the compatibility info mentioned above - then researched further.

Suggestions what to use i/o the salve with DMSO? The least toxic?

Summer sores on the mouth are so difficult to treat. I went through this last summer.

Between the salve and Swat - the goo gets everywhere.
Wherever my horse rubs his mouth. On his halter.
I go through lots of gloves when I’m at the barn.
Then it dawned on me - feeling so sick - I’m doing something very bad for me. .

Thanks again.

Is asking the vet for the salve make up without the DMSO an option? It would be just as or nearly as effective, I’d think, and removing the DMSO would certainly make it less risky for you. There are also ingredients there that are concerning for the horse, like citronella–fine on the outside of the horse, but DMSO is carrying that inside…

Another option would be straight up ivermectin, applied topically?

Can you use a leg paint brush to apply the ointment instead of your hand?

A friend puts the salve in a syringe ( no needle of course). Works really well.

Neoprene or Butyl rubber gloves are best with DMSO.

Alushield might help, keeps the flies off.
