Go with John Deere replacement belt or generic?

Belt for my john deere law tractor broke. Should I go with the $73 John Deere or the generic from Amazon and save $50? It’s the one that turns the blades…

Go with the Deere brand in this case. The added cost will likely be more than offset by the longer life of the belt manufactured to the Deere specifications.

If cost is a real factor at the moment, I’d choose a Stens brand belt. Stens is an old Indiana company but they have been bought and sold a few tirmes in the past couple of decades. But many Stens belts are still manufactured in the US, and are a good quality at lower cost than the Deere branded bekts.

I use the term Deere branded as Deere does not manufacture its own belts. But if Deere brands a belt it meets their engineering requirements.

If you read about mower belts on tractor or mower forums you will see many strong brand opinions, mostly formed by someone having a particular brand of belt break.

For this type of thing I don’t trust Amazon, unless it’s from a verified seller. mtdparts is a good source for oem and “guaranteed to fit” generics

I always go to the Deere shop when I need belts. They are very specific and then I am sure I am getting the right one and that it is made to spec.

I run generic mower belts on our little JD mower and they are fine. It’s a S240 with a 42" deck.

The tractor gets an actual JD belt for the drive over deck. That’s 60 some odd inches wide and just a lot heavier duty.

Check your pulleys etc as you replace, and grease anything with a zerk. They generally dont break out of the blue IMO. Also, if you have those plastic shrouds on the pulleys, take them off and leave them off - they trap debris against the belt/pulleys.
