So is the name Teddy the wonder puppy a fitting tribute or sacreligious?
Good lords, that puppy is beyond-words-cute! Iāve already shown the pictures to one friend, and I canāt wait to share them with everybody else!
And heās already sleeping through the night, and socializing AND getting along (more or less) with his new āsiblingsā? Yowza - thatās awesome! Iām so happy for you!
(And Teddy the Wonder Puppy - sounds good to me! The Wonder Puppy part sounds totally fitting, and Teddy is a great name - on many levels!)
He is gorgeous! I like the name Teddy, and he jumps like him! Sounds like he has a great temperament.
Well the first sign of trouble came today. Teddy is afraid of horses! He didnāt even want to go into the barn. I made him go inside anyway since I needed to go in to do my work. I tied him up safely out of harmās way and when I looked over a few minutes later he was shaking a little. Poor guy, maybe he doesnāt want to be a barn dog? I will keep trying over the coming weeks but if he truly doesnāt like it I guess he can stay home and I will just take my other dog. She thinks the barn is heavenly!

Puppies go thru several fear peroids as they grow up and your puppy may just be in one now and it shows in the fear at the barn:

Keep him where he canāt run off, tied or in a stall or crate and go on about your day.
Was your other dog there with you both?
He should eventually learn that there is nothing to fear there, if you can keep him safe.
I think it shows good sense on a puppy to be afraid of those big monsters wandering around.
Yeah the Pom was with me, she goes pretty much everywhere with me. I made two trips to the barn yesterday as always. The first time was when he was shaking in the aisle. The second time he didnāt even want to get in the car so I took him with me but left him in the car alone while I fed and brought the horses in. I donāt want to make him afraid of the car too as he was enjoying going places before. He seemed fine with being left and waited quietly on my seat.

His first night was even better than expected. It was his first time ever being crated and he didnāt make a peep. I let him out when we got home at 2am and then I woke up at 6 and figured I might as well get up and let him out again so he wasnāt in there for too long at a time. I thought he would whine or bark some but he never did. He is perfectly content to cuddle up and lay with you for as long as you like. His favorite pastime is barking at the cat who totally ignores him. He had his first trip to the barn today which he wasnāt crazy about. He got tied to the wall while I did my work and led the horses out. He stood there looking like he was going to his execution the entire time. Maybe someday he can run around loose like the other dogs but definitely not now. He does have the run of our fenced backyard though so maybe he can master the concept of stick with Mom out there.[/QUOTE]
In fairness, if itās the first time heās ever been to a place that big, and that busy and seen that many HUGE creatures, I wouldnāt blame him for being a little overwhelmed. He didnāt run, scream or try to chew his way free, so at least heās willing to watch.
I agree with others, he probably is going thru a fear period, and everything is so new to him. Heās just a baby (adorable btw) and you need to remember to give him a chance to acclimate. I have my new 9 week old puppy and I am having to remember to give him the special āaloneā time and make sure I am as careful in socializing as my 14 month old. It gets easy to forget. My pup has been introduced to the barn in that I carried him around the barn and let him see the atmosphere and sniff some horses then put him on a leash and walked him around a bit and let some people pet him. Then back in the crate to snooze while I went about my business. Heāll get comfortable with the barn, just give him some time. Personally I would suggest a crate vs. tieing him. And one that isnāt entirely exposed or in a car for his ādownā time at the barn. Crating might give him some ādenā security while he is waiting for you and give him a chance to āsee the goings onā from a safe place. He sounds quite well socialized all ready but this environment is probably a huge change for him.

That is a good idea, to have a crate for him in the barn to keep him safe and as his safe place to run to.
We tie our puppies in the barn because they are more apt to go gung-ho running around and get in trouble then scared and tied they learn patience.
If one is scared, tied in a too open space and left alone may just leave him worry.
I do have a cat carrier that he is still small enough to fit in easily. I guess I could try that at the barn. There really isnāt anywhere to put a crate that is out of the way. Thanks for the suggestions.
Sounds like youāve gotten some good advice already, Laurie - I wouldnāt worry too much about it at the moment - he IS a really little guy, itās been a pretty eventful week for him and horses are⦠well, theyāre big.
Iād definitely keep taking him along and make sure he has a safe place (like the crate) with really good stuff to play with while he waits for you - a Kong with something really good inside (like spray cheese or non-fat cottage cheese and kibble) maybe, or a good long lasting chewy that you only give him when he gets to the barn to help him learn that, hey, the barn is a good place, because really good stuff happens there.
Heāll get past this - and before you know it, youāll probably start wishing heād leave the dang horses (and barn cats and whatever else happens to move) alone - he IS a herding dog, after all!
Ok I think I am starting to get this figured out. I donāt think he is afraid of the horses, I think he doesnāt like being tied up. Today I took him to the feed store. He balked at getting in the car at first but I picked him up and put him in anyway. He was fine on the ride there. We went into the feed store and he loved getting petted and picked up by everyone. I let him pick out his own treat, he chose a cow knuckle or something equally gross. When we got to the barn I left him in the car with his knuckle and he seemed fine the whole time. Twice I took him out and walked him around outside the barn, even very near the horses and he was having a blast. When I went to walk him into the barn he sucked back but I made him come in anyway. He was fine that whole time too as I kept him on the leash but in my hand as opposed to being tied up. Guess my little guy is spoiled already!
Some have good luck training puppies by tying them to a belt loop and so they have their hands free to get other done.
Not all the time, but in some places, that works well.
There may be a place or two where you can try that.
Sounds like he is sure a joy of a puppy.
Good detective work, Laurie!
And what a smart little stinker - less than a week with you and heās already working on getting you wrapped around his little tiny paw!
Yes Laurie, these little guys work us, donāt they :D.
Last nite I opened the stall door while my gelding was eating his hay and brought my little pup in and let him stand and watch on leash. He was fascinated with that huge head and all the chewing and chomping and stuff horses do. A girl was riding in the ring and he was fascinatedā¦preferred watching the horse rather than being petted by a little girl next to him.
Found this on my oldest daughterās facebook page, I think it was taken with her cell so its not the greatest quality but still speaks volumes.
Cute picture.
That is a very photogenic puppy.
Why dogs, when they are hugged and kissed, look like a kid saying, āno, please, not in front of my friendsā.
OMG he is just the cutest thing! Iāve owned shelties and border collies. When I was looking for a new dog in the spring, I put sheltie, border collie and aussie into the search on petfinder. Iām such a sucker for the collie breeds. I got an adult aussie from petfinder. Then 4 months later, I got a border puppy. I have been thinking about getting another dog. 3 is nice because then you can take one with you somewhere and leave the 2 on the farm to keep each other company. I canāt handle 2 at a time off the farm (and watch kids and horses). After seeing these photos⦠number 3 may need to be a sheltie! My bestest dog and best friend growing up was an oversize sheltie. I would love to find another like her. Congrats on your new bundle of love!
Well I believe there is another litter on the way to being ready for adoption. They even have some triās I believe but I didnāt want to wait a couple months until we could get one of them.
When you had the one you picked to choose from, I too would not have waited for the next litter, just for the color.
You got a great puppy there, no matter what color he had come in.
