Godspeed Teddy

New to this thread, but a fellow Sheltie fan here too!!! My 1st Sheltie, Britt, died three years ago. I refused to get another Sheltie because I knew none would ever live up to him. I adopted a wonderful Aussie instead, and she’s a great dog and we love her dearly. This is Krystal:

However, I just got to missing having a Sheltie in the house and decided if I were to get another one, it would be a different color than Britt and I promised myself to never compare him/her to Britt. Britt was a blue merle:

Here is Bailey, a tri, who we just got in January. He’s got his own personality-very Sheltie of course, but still different than Britt and has taken a new place in my heart. Here are pics from 7 weeks old to 6 months old. He is now 9 months old and his coat is really coming in and he’s SO handsome! I adore him!! Him and Krystal get along great, too!

Good for you getting another Sheltie, you will NOT regret it! Your new guy is ADORABLE–enjoy him!

Both of your dogs are lovely. Your old one was as well. I am really missing my sheltie now as we are gearing up for the new puppy which makes me feel guilty because the sheltie has been dead six years but the lab has only been dead a month. It never ceases to amaze me how we jumble things up with emotions and guilt over emotions.

I bet all that will take a back seat to the new puppy, once he is there and the reality of that “bundle of joy” sets in, potty runs and all.

If he is like he seems in the picture, he is one of those that the world is his oyster.
Very nice to start with a confident dog, especially in a shletie, a breed for known shy traits.

Special thanks to BDJ!!!

I arrived home to a package on the doorstep. I was trying to think of something that I had ordered but wasn’t having any luck. I opened it up and there was a pic of my new boy along with a PINK! toy and lots of bones and treats! That was beyond generous and we both thank you so much. Heck I feel like I should be sending you gifts as you were the one who pointed me in the perfect direction. Thanks so very much and thanks to everyone else who walked me through this very emotional time!

Awww, you’re welcome, Laurie!
I knew I had to find something pink for the little guy, he is a part of the McDowell “stable” after all - and my littlest (who’s 3 1/2) loved her “baby dragon” (he’s blue, though) - so I thought your boy might like one, too! (And it took Little Miss Destructo a couple of weeks to rupture her dragon - so I figured it would be sturdy enough for a real baby-dog to enjoy for a while.)

And every puppy needs a Nyla (or two  ) and good treats!

Can’t wait to hear how much fun y’all are having with him this weekend, and I’m just glad that I could help you all find each other!

Ok, here we go! I will post updates as soon as we get home this afternoon. I’m getting a puppy, I’m getting a puppy

Didn’t read all the replies but:

I, too, had a “heart” dog and struggled really hard with my need to replace him with another “large white dog” . I also knew that I probably would be disappointed and was subconsciously trying to recreate him.

One day I was going through online photos from the local shelter. A GSD face looked back at me and within 30 min I was there talking to her. I didn’t immediately jump but went to visit with her for the next few days. Thankfully they were being VERY selective about who adopted her so I felt safe waiting a day or so.

She came with more than her share of issues but I have grown to love her without question
(OK maybe a few when she bit me out of fear on the 4th day - sigh) I have never owned a GSD before but WOW is she smart
and I will have another one day!

I think it was best for me to go with something different and it worked. One day I will again get my white dog but I know it will be for the right reasons.

Spend a little time with the ones you are looking at and check out the personalities and how they react to you
your heart will tell you which one is the right one.

He is home but I am not. I woke up with a raging sinus infection so I am at the express care dr. He is cute and sweet as expected. Right now he is overwhelmed by all the new people as the whole neighborhood came to greet him. He reacts by standing like a statue. He has already made about a hundred laps around the backyard. It will be fun to watch how he changes as he becomes more comfortable with the whole thing.
Once again thanks to all who took this journey with me. I couldn’t have done it without you!

It is never a good time to ge sick.
I hope they give you something strong, so you start feeling better soon.

Sounds like puppy is in good hands, many of them.
Better get well quickly and come claim your little boy.
Don’t worry about pictures, we can wait.

I would never make you guys wait for pics. The first of the antibiotics are on board and the first of the pictures are rolling in! The last pic is the Pom’s overall impression of the new puppy.

He’s too cute! You’re little guy look so much like my dear Gus (1972-1985).

He’s a lucky boy.

Hope you feel better soon.

Beautiful puppy!

The pictures are great and that last one is marvelous.

OMG - cuteness overdose! Congrats on your new family member.

Congrats! So cute!! I liked the pom’s look in the first pic. Kind of reminds me of how our Cali reacted at first when we brought the border collie puppy home. Of course, they ended up becoming best friends (once the border collie learned to leave her alone for at least a little bit ;)).

Hope the antibiotics kick in quick and you feel better soon!

Any puppy news this morning?
Older dog’s nose still out of joint?
Your sinuses back to working properly?

I don’t know why but my horses and dogs have always “found” me. I think you will know in your heart the one that is right for you.

good luck,

Karen

Ps. I had a tri colored Sheltie Mandy growing up and she was the best dog friend I ever had!

His first night was even better than expected. It was his first time ever being crated and he didn’t make a peep. I let him out when we got home at 2am and then I woke up at 6 and figured I might as well get up and let him out again so he wasn’t in there for too long at a time. I thought he would whine or bark some but he never did. He is perfectly content to cuddle up and lay with you for as long as you like. His favorite pastime is barking at the cat who totally ignores him. He had his first trip to the barn today which he wasn’t crazy about. He got tied to the wall while I did my work and led the horses out. He stood there looking like he was going to his execution the entire time. Maybe someday he can run around loose like the other dogs but definitely not now. He does have the run of our fenced backyard though so maybe he can master the concept of stick with Mom out there.

The person who fostered him did a wonderful job with him. I would say he is already housetrained for the most part. Not sure I would trust him to have the run of the house for long periods of time but he has been perfect so far. They taught him to sit and shake and give high five etc. The only thing they didn’t teach him was how to walk on a leash. That is step one in my book but no matter, we will get it done.

Today is the pony club camping trip. I think we will go and take the horse and hang out for the day then come home and rejoin them in the morning. Might be a little too soon for camping. Plus then I get a real bed and not a sleeping bag!

Well either we will have the most socialized dog on the planet or his brain will fall out but so far, so good! We took him to the pony club camp yesterday. We were there about 8 hours and I don’t think he touched the ground once! He had every little girl in the club carrying him around, cradling him on his back like you would a baby. He fell asleep every time. We came home and he ran around the back yard a bit then went into his crate and went to sleep and didn’t make a peep all night. This morning he was being tortured by the cat who refused to run away when he charged at him barking madly. We are going back to the camp to pick up my daughter after one last cross country school in a little bit.

What a terrific start in socializing and making him a part of your family.
He is such a handsome fellow, of course all kids wanted to keep him with them and show him off.

Don’t forget to keep taking pictures.

Pony club camp went better than you could ever imagine. He is not only taking everything in stride, he is loving every second. He got a bath after swimming in the bay though. I didn’t want that dirty water drying on his stitches.
