Golden Retriever recommendations in VA

Family member has been interested in adding a Golden to the family for about a year. Prefers a puppy. Active, outdoorsy lifestyle on a farm with pool, river, another dog,* two middle-school-aged boys. Looking for social, low-prey drive (cat, chickens, goat, cattle), family pet. I’m pretty tuned into the dog sport communities. Here’s the kicker: she has her heart set on a red. The vast majority of darker Goldens I see come from field lines, which would not be suitable. Don’t know why the color diff and maybe it’s just a regional difference.

Though there is a lot of exercise, there is also a lot of autonomy and not the structure you’d have in a sport or hunting home. The field lines I see can be high as a kite in a tornado. Have Aussie and BC experience. Excellent vet and grooming references.

*The pound hound from the Humane Society has both temperamental and structural issues that have prompted her to seek a breeder. (Fortunately, this is a household that can afford TPLO surgery at 9mo on their newly adopted “I see ghosts” pet.) This time around, they are seeking a different avenue.

I’d prioritize a breeder who does ample health testing and does something with the dogs (either conformation or performance - ideally both).

Not my breed or state but based off of some quick searching I’d recommend looking into:

Breeders to potentially avoid:

Gap View: has drawn a fair amount of criticism from the breeding community and back in 2010 experienced an AKC suspension.

Painted Knoll

Have the Golden Retriever club - Puppy Referral program gives a listing of puppy referral volunteers by state/Regional Club:

I would suggest having her email the Regional Clubs nearest her and seeing if she can talk to some breeders.
