Puppies and kittens freeze to death in the North. Not necessarily so in the South. That goes a long way towards reducing the pet population of the North.
I doubt that’s it. Even in warmer months, you just don’t ever see stray dogs. Feral cats some and some strays, but the coyote population and fishers aren’t conducive to longevity. The shelters still gets loads of locally owner surrendered litters of kittens, but the shelter near me has pushed their in house low cost spay/neuter and is seeing dividends from it. Local owner surrendered litters of puppies are rare.

I’m up north and we absolutely have a pet overpopulation problem here. Yes, lots of “pit bulls” but also plenty of other dog types (and cats). Including trendy-doodles one they get big and not so cute.
I think the term “overpopulation” is relative; there definitely are unwanted dogs and cats in this area - but there are generally few puppies in shelters; and those that you see in rescues may not be from this area.

According to Petfinder - there are 2996 available dogs within 100 miles of me, in a variety of rescues and shelters…529 of them are identified as “babies”…but looking at the list I see a litter of 9 puppies that I know for sure were imported from a kill shelter “down south” (I believe SC but can’t remember). Not sure what the % of those babies came from other places.

Actually…so far more than 2/3 of the first two pages of Petfinder puppies are not local dogs; some have not even “arrived” yet, and others are “available for transport” from VA, NC, and other states.

Speaking about the shelters in Philadelphia, yes there are plenty of dogs. Including young ones. Many get put to sleep. No they are not trucking them in from the south. I doubt many city shelters have time to do Petfinder. They are too busy putting dogs to sleep :frowning: There is absolutely an overpopulation here in the city.
