Good air compressor for truck and trailer tires?

I know there was a thread, but I can’t find it.

I only use my truck to pull the trailer, and the trailer’s tires always need inflation before use. Gas station pumps take forever. I can take it to a tire place ahead of time and they do it for free, but I have to drive it there, fill it up, and then back.

So, I’m going to buy one. I just want something I can plug in that will fill it up. I have a little bitty emergency one in the car that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but it doesn’t even do car tires well.

This is recommended, but it seems small and pathetic:

I think someone recommended this. It seems more sturdy:

There’s a whole page on Amazon and I can get it before the show. So, under $100, good and solid. What do you recommend?

Yeah, skip that first one. I personally like the Porter & Cable stuff. Those red round pancake ones seem to work well for your most basic stuff. Very easy to move around too.

Forgot to add, if you buy one used, be sure hook an actual hose to it and run it. I neglected to do that end ended up with one with a leaky regulator.

We have a 33gal Craftsman that I use to do my tires, but it’s not “pick it up and use it” it’s on wheels and you have to roll it - that said it can juice up my truck and trailer tires in less than a minute per tire.

Seems Craftsman has a smaller one available, but it’s $150. That’s probably what I would buy. We’ve had good luck with ours. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-airboss-8482/p-00916574000P?prdNo=10&blockNo=10&blockType=G10

I actually have this as my portable emergency air source and it inflates faster than one of those ones that draws power from the car. And since it doesn’t have to attach to the car, I can do the trailer when it’s hooked up. I set it to 55PSI for the trailer and hook it up and it shuts off when it gets there so I don’t have to pay attention to it. I do it while I’m getting the trailer ready sometimes so I don’t have to use the big compressor as often.

I would recommend either the Campbell- H or the Porter-C for mainly the tank. You can start the compressor, and while it builds pressure get started on checking the tires. The tank will also fill the tires faster than waiting for an inflator to pump air. I also recommend getting a 50 foot air hose instead of electrical extension cords. Plug the compressor directly into the outlet… (no extension cord) use the hose to get air to your tires without moving the compressor.

Extension cords reduce the voltage to the compressor motor. The lowered voltage causes the motor to draw more current generating more heat. Heat is the enemy of electric motors.

I have the little Campbell H, and it has been running strong for about 6 years now, other then I had to replace the hose and connector last year. I use it for truck, car, horse trailer, tractor, and muck cart tires. Can’t beat it for the price! I had a much bigger, more expensive one that just went up in smoke about 6 years ago - literally.

Thanks for the feedback. That makes sense about filling up a tank instead of pumping, and I would not have thought of that.

I knew you guys would help me. Campbell H it is!

I know you were looking for 110v unit but this is a 12v that is worth considering if all you need is to do tires (and beach balls, pool floats, etc.):

I use it for everything except for the main tires on my big John Deere tractor. It is quick, handy, and it lives in the cab of the John Deere unless we are taking the trailer out, and then it lives in the truck!

It is not cheap to buy, but then it’s not cheaply made (as most are).

I got mine at the local Advance Auto store. If all you need is tire inflation it’s worth a look!

ARB makes good stuff but it depends if you want something perm. installed and hookups on the outside of your truck or you want something external all together. They are quite common in the 4wd community.
