Good barn coat

I need a new barn coat for feeding in the mornings. I need waterproof b/c I seem to always get the snow/rain/etc on the days I feed. I have an ancient Pacific Trail that I love but it is far from waterproof anymore (if it ever was, it’s prob 15 years old) and a Columbia that does ok in snow but not rain. I prob won’t ride in it a lot and, while I do want insulated, it doesn’t need to be ready for the Arctic b/c I stay pretty warm riding & doing chores. Prefer under $200, as it might be going on my list for Santa. What are your recommendations? Thanks!

This is kind of the style I’ve been looking for. Bonus if it will cover my butt, although I don’t want it really long

I have this Carhartt that I bought as an irregular.

I love it for barn work, and I’ve been riding in it, too. It’s a little bit longer in the back and very roomy around the bottom. I haven’t tested it in the rain for much longer than 10 minutes or so, but it keeps me dry for the short walk from house to barn.

I love the tough Carhartt fabric … doesn’t rip when it gets poked or caught on something.

Krystl, your link doesn’t work…

Huh! Should have known. I thought I finally figured out how folks do those links with words (embedded? is that what it’s called?).

How about this: http://www.supercasuals.com/Carhartt/Carhartt_100657.cfm

I love my pile fleece lined Berne. Fits my curvy figure way better than Carhartt but similar fabric. I will post link when I get on my laptop.

Omg it worked on my phone

Here’s what I have: http://www.berneouterwear.com/berne/originalquilt-linedchorecoat.htm

Very warm, especially when layered with fleece, rain/snow repellent, amazingly windproof too. Love it!

For really cold days, I add a pair of insulated overalls (also Berne). Wouldn’t want to ride in 'em, but they keep me toasty warm doing chores.

I got the discontinued version of this jacket from the Bit of Britain mobile unit at FHI a year ago:

I have worn mine in the worst of weather and I don’t feel a thing. Best money I ever spent.

It comes in several lengths.

I second the LL Bean Winter Warmer coat or jacket. The jacket stops at the waist, the coat covers the butt. I bought mine last year (the coat). You can adjust it in several places, but it’s not a slimming silhouette–this baby was made for people who like to stay warm! The coat and jacket have a zipper and snaps. It has cuffs in the sleeves, pile lining and is quilted inside, and it snaps at the neck, and under the chin. Outer shell repels water and is durable. I can’t say enough good things about it.

The only drawback is the zipper is plastic and most of the times I can’t zip it up, but it’s still plenty warm! I really needed it last year and that’s the only reason I didn’t opt to send it back or complain. If I had I’m sure Bean would have made good–my bad… Oh, you can unzip the zipper from the bottom in case you have to squat down.

It only comes in two lengths, but it comes in petite, regular and tall, I believe. I’m short and the petite was just right. I’d like to get another one. I ordered a size larger than I thought I would need so I could layer stuff under it. Worth every penny!

The Smartpak Winter Riding Coat is on sale today for $49:
https://www.smartpakequine.com/smartpak-winter-jacket-10732p I had/have a similar coat from KyraK which is great for riding, but not for those screamingly cold days.

I have a CE Schmidt (Tractor Supply) Workwear Coat that is waterproof, but I don’t see it on their website anymore. This is the closest I can come to it: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/ce-schmidtreg%3B-ladies-sanded-washed-duck-sherpa-lined-hooded-jacket-106802799--1

I also have a Carrhart Womens Sherpa Lined Duck coat, which is very tough and resilient, however, it does not have a hood, nor is it waterproof, so it has limited use for me.

A ‘normal’ coat will last one winter in the barn. The CE Schmidt is going on year 3. The Carrhart is from last Spring clearance so it has gotten limited use.

Thanks, everybody! I will keep all these in mind, but two I was already looking at were the Smartpak coat and the LL Bean Warmer jacket.

Mountain Horse caveat - their zippers SUCK. Spray some PAM on whatever zippers you get so they zip up quicker in the cold too.

I love my Carhartt. I am never cold in it. It is water-resistant, but not water-proof. It’s their standard Carhartt and is not figure flattering but I’d rather be warm and comfy than look skinny and cold!!

I also have a Horseware Babel jacket that I received last year for Christmas. The description says it is waterproof, it’s really more water-resistant (I have never gotten wet in it when it rains, but the material doesn’t reflect water either). It is SO warm and is perfect for riding and chores.

I don’t know anything about this jacket but it has good reviews and is only $50 for today:

Oops someone mentioned it above! Just checked my email lol.
