Good hay for sale in CT

We are relocating to Connecticut (the Newtown area) during the latter part of November and we will need to buy hay for our three horses. We currently live in the Midwest and feed brome and alfalfa so a timothy mix or somewhere I can get some bales of timothy and some bales of alfalfa would be ideal. A place that delivers would be icing on the cake! Also, does anyone know the going rate for hay in this area? I’m expecting some sticker shock - as everything in the CT area has been surprisingly high! Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Eeks, it’s going to be a little bit hard to find hay in CT at this point in the year. (New Englander’s like to hoard it in their barns the day after it’s cut! ) I imagine that you’re going to have it trucked in from out of state, and expect to pay $5-$7 a bale.

Next year, keep an eye on craigslist or on the fields near your house. That’s how you’ll score the best deals until you’ve made some friends in the horse community. You can try craigslist now, too, but expect slim/not great quality pickings.

You can call Shagbark in Haddlyme (look it up online, shagbark farm supplies) I know they deliver but not how far away, and they have two locations, dunno where other is. The point is, they may know where closer to Newington you can ask about. Shagbark is about 25 mins to newington off rt 9.

Get a copy of Steed Read - at any feed, grain, Agway, tack shop, mom and pop, vet, and online at steedread.com because much hay is advertised in steedread. Including tractor trailers of it coming from NY, which local folk will ‘get together’ 12 people to buy a trailer load. You can subscribe to steedread to get the magazine delivered to your barn or house. Its a monthly.

Use http://www.steedread.com to find barns and people nearby you to call and find out about hay they have or what they know about getting hay right now.

Use http://www.justhorses.com to find local barns, trainers, blacksmiths, services. Someone you can get in touch with oughta be able to steer you in the right direction.

Good luck.

There is also a hay wanted/available thread on the COTH marketplace page. You may want to post there as well!

MistyBlue has a good source for hay in CT.

Yup, I know my guy has some extra orchard grass/timothy mix this year in Durham.

Another guy in Durham that has same mix and he has extra this year too.

neither really deliver…first guy will deliver but only has a pick up and he gets about 65 bales in it tied down.

Shagbark has all the types you’re looking for…I think they start at $7.50 per bale.

So does Lakeside in Guilford. About the same price. Both Lakeside and Shagbark deliver or you can order a full tractor trailer load from Shagbark. Alfalfa is expensive here…we don’t really grow it much since our climate only has 2 cuttings annually. 3 once in a rare while.

I also know a guy in Cheshire who can get timothy/oc mix and deliver small to large loads. He gets his from VT, he owns his own trucking company so when he comes back from VT he fills his truck with hay. He also sells bedding, great guy.

The Cheshire and Durham guys charge around $6-$6.50 per bale or so. The Durham guys both have second cut that’s to die for, smells better than Christmas.

PM me for contact info. And welcome to CT. (soon!) And yep, unfortunately most everything will give you sticker shock here. <–get used to making that face.

Guin…you need any hay for your new little buddy?

Hi, I live near Newtown. I know of some places that might be a little far away but they have good quality hay all winter. Town Corn in Morris, CL Adams in Woodburry, Steve Solly (you can find him in the phone book) He delivers hay in bulk and he’s in washington Depot.
