I buy the hoof polish enhancer. Super shiny and lasts just about one class.
Are you doing breed shows? What does the rule book say for the association under which you are showing? Hoof oil is pretty easy to remove, and usually only lasts for one lap around the ring, unless it’s a grass ring. I can’t imagine a judge caring one whit if a horse has hoof black on during a show in which the judge may be looking at horses all day long in multiple divisions. They know if they are judging all those different divisions in one day, and will not be surprised to see some horses cross entering. Most of the time they want a quick, definite decision and to move the show along. I’d check with the show secretary if the rule book does not guide you.
Hoof oil also picks up dust and dirt the first lap so why bother? It’s not like his hoof needs lubrication for 10 minutes in the ring. Nice clean hoof with hair trimmed nicely around the coronet looks fine, especially in a Ranch horse division where cosmetic enhancements are not the point.
