Good waterproof riding coats

So if I don’t want an oilskin, or waxed cloth of any kind…too hot and humid here for those to be desirable. AND I don’t want the generic yellow PVC type for 20 bucks (again, too hot)…

Is this a product anyone’s seen and could comment on?

I don’t mind spending the $, but would be buying it sight unseen.

Any others you guys like? I do want the full coat, for wind and rain protection, and wearing as a top layer in cold weather for wind/cold.

Suggestions are most welcome!!

I’ve yet to meet a waterproof coat or jacket that wasn’t hot, even the so-called breathable ones like GoreTex (which lose either their breathability or waterproofness if they get dirty and get washed a lot, in my experience)… I’d love to hear about it if someone has a good recommendation.

I have the Kix n Bux coat. It is a beautiful, well made coat with a great design.

But I haven’t had a chance to ride in the rain to try it out.

I hate long coats and opted for the Moutain horse extreme weather pants and my NorthFace goretex jacket- snug as a bug un a rug and super dry!

Here’s a thread on rain slickers on another forum:

Muddy Creek gals make ripstop type nylon gear… lightweight and doesn’t cause condensation…

I’ve heard that this gear is a big hit with the folks who ride across Michigan (MTRA.org) and I see John Lyons endoreses it too.

I got one of those kixnbux coats from the distributor about a year ago for free.

What makes it great is it’s lightweight, breathable and covers the entire saddle and my legs, but still rolls up to the size of a regular slicker. Everything stays dry but you don’t sweat under it.

What makes it a pain is its bright yellow. I look like a giant easter chick on the ground…

PS, the sizing is men’s I think. I swam in a size medium and actually fit a size small. And I am 5’7" and 160 lbs. My SIL got the large, but she is 6 feet tall and about 250 lbs.

I, too, like the Kix N Bux rain slicker, and Muddy Creek. You really cannot go wrong with either.

Don’t forget, though, that Kerrits now makes a long riding coat. Cute as all heck. I am not sure if it is water-resistant or -proof.

A friend of mine once just made a waterproof apron, and wore her regular rain coat. Made sense to me.

I just bought a full Aussie style, nylon type material coat at Cabela’s.It’s made by Outback Co. It’s very lightweight and the water just rolls off of it.It’s truly an Aussie riding coat, with the straps to tighten to your leg,has a tuck away hood, and the whole darn things tucks into itself and can be carried like a backpack(tiny) or put on the saddle. $59.99…I’ve been looking for over a year for the right rain gear and this is it for me.

I can vouch for these coats. You will stay dry, and so will your saddle!!! 2 thumbs up!!

I also have an old Barbor coat - heavy, high maintenance. But it works very well also.

It rained all weekend here and I can again vouch for the Kix N Bux coat.

It was PERFECT!

Rain was cold and sucky, but we needed it.

i bought kerrits coach’s coat.

it is awesome. although i have not had a chance to ride in it yet (it has all the riding bells and whistles) i wore it in the rain and it is awesome. it’s dry, it’s lite, and it’s breathable. oh, and you can get a zip in liner for it.

Marta,
Those coats are just lovely! I would probably end up wearing it as my nice winter coat… not wanting to get it all horsey!

Hooray for you!

Diamond Jake,

i know, i brought it to the barn 2 weeks ago when we had remnants of one of the hurricanes passing through thinking i’ll wear it during turnout. but then i decided i didn’t want to stink it up, so i wore this plastic poncho for 99 cents which of course resulted in me getting thoroughly soaked, not to mention that some of the horses thought i was a scary monster in a pink plastic bag;)

the other great part about MY coat is that i got it on sale in the spring for like $60 and the regular price is near $200!!!

Two big thumbs up for Muddy Creek…excellent customer service and the quality is top notch. Love those girls and love their coats

So… what did you get? 1 big, long coat? or the short coat and the chaps?

The big long coat- I tend to ride with my camera and saddlebags and want them to stay dry, too. And I think they look rockin’ cool:D. We’ll see how broke my friend’s Arab is too long floppy coats next week in MT, LOL. She spun out from under me a few years back so I’m prepared to eat dirt again if the wind pops up. Goofy horse! Hmm, maybe I’ll pack my chaps anyway for stick-um power

I’ve got the long coat and chaps - when its a gusher they even keep you and saddle dry.
