Good Western Magazine

I am settling in to the Western riding/stock horse world now and I would love to find a good magazine with articles about training, riding, etc. especially about cutting and working cow stuff. Any suggestions?

My favorite by a mile is Eclectic Horseman - it IS eclectic but it’s plenty “cow-y.” They have a quarterly video magazine (DVD) also, called Horseman’s Gazette. You may be able to get a 2-for-1 deal on both - they run specials fairly often.

There’s always Western Horseman too, but as I said, I prefer EH.

Western Horseman.

The Quarter Horse News.

Yes, that one is specific to the disciplines of cutting, reining and working cowhorse.

AQHA, APHA, cutting and reining have their own magazines also.

While it is not western specific, I love Equus for the health articles!

Western Horseman is also good as a “general” magazine.

But each sport will have their own magazine too. Being a barrel racing, I’m always excited when my new copy of Barrel Horse News arrives.

Reined Cowhorse News is the NRCHA’s official publication. They have some training articles. Some sample issues are on the website.

Western Horsemen has more training/riding stockhorse articles.

Eclectic Horseman has some very good articles on training & riding, many having to do with cows, but many just foundational that are great to getting back to the basics.

AQHA has lots of articles on their website re: stockhorse/cutting training/riding. Most of them are reprints from articles in their QH Journal or from their America’s Horse magazines. They also have free emails that you can sign up for.

Quarter Horse News would be a great choice for you. The NRHA Reiner is also available in a digital format at nrha.com.
