Google Maps/Waze for those who trailer???

I know this has come up before but was looking for current thoughts on a Maps/Waze sort of app for those who trailer (probably something designed for truckers??). I went to a show today and both ways Maps put me onto back roads that were really difficult with the trailer. I think the drive was really hard on my horse and I really wished for a better option. I figured truck drivers don’t do well on pot-holed roads with a million stops and starts either but didn’t know if anyone had opinions on the best/easiest to use app.

Interesting. I’ve found Waze to take me on more side roads than Google Maps.

Look at an actual map?

Yeah, look at a map without the driving directions. They are online. Waze will show you a regular map but needs to be convinced that’s what you want. Most of the directions ones take you the shortest way…which can take well longer then a few more miles on a more sensible route.

There is a free app called Trucker Path that I have downloaded to both my phone and iPad. It is meant for big rigs, and since I am shorter than they are both in length and height I figure I should be fine.

I also have a Garmin truck GPS that is very handy as it has a large screen, has places I can fuel up, and I can put in length and height requirements. It was well worth the investment.

I actually got into a situation last year at a campground that was three miles off a main road. I specifically asked the owner if I would have any issues getting in with a larger trailer (28’ on the floor). He told me I should not have any problems, he had much larger rigs at the campground. I got about halfway into the last three miles and came to hairpin turns I barely made it through, then had to go over a 100 yard single lane bridge with a sharp right hand turn coming off the bridge, onto a dog leg turn with trees literally right at the edge of the road. Has I known all this, I am not sure I would have attempted it. My husband was in the passenger seat messing his pants while I negotiated it, and I am no wimp when it comes to trailering. I worried about coming out our entire time at camp, which detracted from the fun of the trip. We came home and re-evaluated our needs for camping and traded down to a trailer that is 8’ shorter.

I found the app and GPS after that experience.

I use an app called “Trucker Path” that is set up for larger rigs.

I also use a Garmin GPS, specifically made from big rigs.

I was asking specifically about apps. I can absolutely look at a map before I leave for my destination but if the route is complicated it’s not going to help me.

I’m guessing there is no such thing or else the truckers are keeping the info to themselves.

I have posted here twice and it keeps saying pending, probably because of the links I attached, but Trucker Path is a great, free app.
