Goopy hair - rain rot?

My guy has some goopy clumps in his hair on the underside of his belly. He had this last year in many places and I was told rain rot. I’ve never dealt with this prior to this year. When I research rain rot it seems to indicate dry crusty scabs. This is like clumpy sticky stuff in his hair. I doesn’t even really seem to be on his skin, I can get “under” it if you will, but it’s hard to pull out due to the stickiness. I washed him with ketohex last night, but I’m really unsure what the correct treatment is. We are approaching weather too cold to bathe and we also don’t have hot water at my barn. I’ll take all advice on how to clean this up quickly. Thanks.

I think rain rot can present in a few different ways. In my one experience with it, it first appeared in what looked like hives, with one area–behind a front leg–appearing in a weird, almost like pine sap kind of way. Because of its weird presentation, it took me a while to figure out it was rain rot.

After trying what seemed like every topical product out there, I had a tough case, and the only thing that really truly got rid of it was by using medicated shampoos, so I would start doing that asap while it’s still warm. I found a chlorhexadine-based shampoo to work best (the keto-hex would be fine), bathing every day for a week or two. If going longer than a week, I’d mix it up with a benzoyl peroxide shampoo for a day or two.

This may seem aggressive, but I battled it for a couple of months with topicals (it was too cold to bathe) before switching to the shampoo. So you might want to just try to hit this hard while it’s still somewhat reasonable to bathe.

Once you start blanketing, you may want to think about using No Thrush Powder or Coat Defense as a preventative.

I have coat defense powder and I thought about applying that today simply to try and dry it up? I’ve never used it before.

I use Biozide on small skin infections and wounds. It’s basically betadine in gel form, so it will kill both bacteria and fungi. And because it’s a gel, it will stay on for several days. One or two applications usually clears things up.

Is the skin affected, or is it just sticky stuff in the hair?

Could the sticky goo be smegma from his penis?
