GoPro - Tips on Adjusting

Question for you GoPro users: how do you adjust your camera to ensure that the field of view is ideal? I have had a GoPro for a while now but haven’t figured out how to nail it every time. Sometimes it’s adjusted well and other times it isn’t. For instance, the last event I was in I was so disappointed to find out that I hadn’t adjusted the camera properly so you can only just see the tips of my horse’s ears sometimes throughout the XC course. Which was very disappointing. But how do you know, every time, that it’s going to be good? I feel like there’s some trick I’m not getting.
I’m using the head strap mount.

Here’s a useful article that covers some beginner tips for GoPro cameras: https://valoso.com/blog/useful-gopro-tips-for-beginners/

You can get a free app from the go pro site that allows you to view it on your phone via wifi that the GoPro generates for itself. That’s how we check out underwater footage when we’re filming. You need to be fairly nearby so hop on and have a friend check it. Once you have it adjusted turn that feature off, it kills the battery.

We usually mark the angles on the mount with a sharpie so we can replicate it but if it’s a helmet mount that seems hard to do unless you want a permanent line on your forehead.

I use the app with my GoPro, I’ve made the error of not having it properly looking ahead, but it wasn’t terrible.

The best thing about the app is someone on the ground can start the go pro instead of you in the start box. Many times I thought I started it, but didn’t. So disappointed.

Agreed. Working with someone on the ground is your best bet. My hubby also somehow used some Styrofoam pieces with the helmet strap to stabilize the camera. But he works with sports video for a living and has all kinds of MaCGyver tricks.

Thank you for this thread. Got one for xmas, and am a little intimidated by all the moving parts. I am not technologically talented.
I am planning to use the helmet strap over my helmet cover?
Or do I put it under? My helmet cover is pretty tight, so I don’t know if it will fit.

Has anyone done the permanent “mount” to your helmet?

I use the head strap mount with my GoPro. While there are not really set angle settings with the mount you can kind of feel individual “clicks” as you adjust it if that makes any sense at all. I usually tilt mine down about two to three of these “clicks” and its typically a pretty good angle.

Here’s a couple of my helmet cam videos for reference of how it looks:

I suggest figuring out a way to remember how far you angled it down and then do a test run to see if you’re happy with the angle. One less thing to worry about before leaving the start box

My FI got me one for Christmas too! I was so excited when I opened it-especially when he told me he looked at them but it was too expensive and he wasn’t getting me one for xmas.

Im not super good with technology, so Ive gotten a lot of videos of myself trying to turn it on and off. I did take one video skiing, but then went past a snowgun and got covered so you couldnt see.

Has anyone ridden in the chest harness? I got one for skiing but I wondered what that would look like while riding.

Also what do you all us to carry all of the stuff-extra batteries, the different covers, etc?

Yes! I am trying to get better with it, I will try the helmet mount, but I also wonder - how to carry all the other stuff.

JFCeventer - thank you for the youtubes!

My BF bought me the GoPro 3, I think I messed up the settings and made it a little more fish bowl like and a little pixelated, still need to figure it out.

I just wish it wasn’t so big, but its so cool to ride with it and relive it!
