Gorilla Carts

I’m searching for a dump cart, and came across these on Amazon (this one allegedly moves 1200 pounds).

I’m looking for a cart that is easier to dump. I know this isn’t hydraulic, and I’ll still have to lift the bed, but I’m tired of turning the whole wheel barrel upside down to empty it.

Some of the reviews are not so keen on the cart, so I wondered whether any fellow COTHers had any experience with them?

I have that one and I love it… can be a pain to get the last bit of stuff out of it when dumping since you can’t use the wrenching side to side trick so I take the manure fork with me. You don’t have to lift much weight to dump it even when it’s full of rocks. It’s well balanced and the wheels move together in a way that assists the dumping.

Downside is that it doesn’t hold very much volume but you can make higher sides for it.

My wheelbarrow has been pretty much unused since we bought the Gorilla Cart.

I need to find a new handle for it though… DH destroyed it by trying to back it up attached to the lawnmower. Still works but it’s hard to get the pins in.

We have the one you linked to. I use it for picking up manure in the pastures (pulling with the lawn tractor) and hauling things like brush or gravel. For manure, I have dumped it in our compost bin and it was easy enough for me, but it does take effort as you are lifting the weight up somewhat to dump. When my UPS driver delivered it, since it was obvious what the contents were, he said his dad uses one all the time to clean stalls at the boarding barn he owns. The only thing that makes me wonder about using it for a lot of manure cleanup is the fact you can’t really turn it over or upend easily, so once you’ve dumped, not everything will necessarily slide out, and I’ve had to push it the rest of the way with a broom or something. I think for doing a lot of stall cleaning, that might get old fast!

I do like ours a lot and it has been super useful around here. Very durable so far. Just not sure it would suit the purpose you have in mind. Hopefully others will weigh in. You might look at the Home Depot reviews (they sell it as well, same price IIRC) as well as sometimes they are a different sort of buyer than found on Amazon.

I have this one. It has been a great wheel barrow to have, but I think the cart would be easier to switch between towable and moving it by hand.

I agree with others stating that you have to take the manure fork with you when you dump because you can’t get the last bit out, although the tipping of the dump bed is not hard. Another draw back is that you can’t (or at least not as easily) push it up a mound of manure and dump on the top the same way you can with a regular wheelbarrow.

I have that one. I do like it, but when dumping it is not always the easiest to get the last bits out. It is difficult to back up when attached to a mower/lawn tractor; I also bent my handle. I will say, however, for cleaning my hilly 2 acre pasture and then going uphill to my compost/manure area, pulling that along is far easier than pushing a wheelbarrow.

I have a similar cart. I don’t like it because it’s much harder to pull than to push my two-wheel wheelbarrow. I have bad knees and they kill me if I pull too much with it.

if you buy one write down the model number as the manufacturer has about fifty or so variations which makes getting replacement parts difficult since there is not a specific model number embedded into the product … but you can get any of the parts as long as you know which version you have

My boss has one of these for the feed cart, and I hate it! I can’t comfortably tilt it enough to push it along without catching the “kickstand” on the ground or smashing my shins against it. That single “kickstand” is in a really crappy spot.

That said, it may work better for someone taller? I am barely 5’6 and the height of the handles means I need to lislift the stupid thing up to my armpits before it tilts enough to not catch on the muddy ground…

You should tell the mfg this! I bet men designed it, & it never occurred to them how short most women are.

Of the two carts, I thought I liked your better. Thanks for the fair warning!

Thanks for all the responses. I’m 5’10", so maybe the height thing won’t be such a bother. Had not thought about the pushing vs. pulling, and I really had not considered the “getting it up to the top of the manure pile” issue. I was thinking it probably would not completely empty. Seems that there is always a trade off.

the rear lip of the cart should be shorter as you cannot fully empty the thing without jerking it forward

I am 5’8". I can lift the wheelbarrow to move it without too much trouble, but if the ground is bumpy it can be an issue.

The kick stand is in a BAD place. It is a shin buster for sure.

I can use the wheelbarrow in a push or pull position due to the shape of the handles.

The transition to a cart works if you have the “right” connection, which is not a ball hitch. It is some other small garden lawn mower connection. I use a section of chain and clip it to the converted wheel barrow and sling the chain over the ball hitch on our cart. It makes backing up to the manure pile a challenge!

I have the one in the OP, not the one with the kickstand. I like it. I use it to move hay from my hay garage to my pasture. I am really looking forward to when it is nice out and I am pulling it with my lawn tractor–I will make sure not to back up after reading these posts.

I think dumping a wheel barrow is easier, for the reason listed (harder to get the last portion out). If you are just getting it for poop, a wheel barrow will work better. It would work best for manure from the top of a ramp. But I like having a clean wagon and a dirty wheelbarrow. It is going to be very handy in the summer when I am moving stuff around and working in my garden. I would like to build up some sides, so any advice on that is welcome.

I have no trouble lifting it to tip when it is overflowing with pure, wet manure. I am 5’8." It is a little heavier to pull (even empty) than I thought it would be, but it makes sense, as it is heavier-duty than my wheel barrow. Putting it together took my whole afternoon–an extra set of hands would have been good, but I managed by myself.

I’ll have to remember that for my new place - do you ever hook it up to an ATV or do you just push/pull it around?

So far, just pulling it around. We do have the adapter to tow it with, but have not needed it. The best thing is it dumps easily and fully.

Yikes, for the price, though, I’ll keep my gorilla cart and push out the little bits that remain. Wonder if there is a non-horse-branded version of that for less.

Nope, made in the USA and worth every penny.

I have the OP cart and an EZ cart. Gorilla is best for hay bales and EZ best for manure.

I have that exact one, and love it.
I am all of 5’2" and find it very easy to dump.
The only issue I had was a flat tire, but if you’d seen the ground I’ve pulled it over, you’d forgive it. Every tire in my place needs instantly filled with foam
