All, does anyone have suggestions (or can point me to a prior thread) regarding electronic collar systems that enable you to set an electronic perimeter for your dog without having to lay down a physical fence or in-ground wire? I am looking to maximize the area on my farm (50 acres) where the dog can go, without having him cross over to the neighbors. House and barn sit in the middle of the property. All of the dogs stay close by the house/barn, and stay close on walks, except one, who was taken in as a skittish stray, and while very sweet now, likes to roam by himself. He always comes back, but the neighbors don’t like it. He is neutered.
The wireless ones usually have a limited perimeter. My sister uses this one https://www.petsafe.net/fencing/wireless-fences
The only one I know of that has limitless boundaries and can work on different types of terrain is the brand “Invisible Fence”. It is pricey though and they require a quote and don’t give outright prices… some quotes I’ve seen are $3500 and up. There were some complaints about the battery on the collars not holding charge for very long so if you don’t want to constantly charge your collar (back when I was looking into this a couple years ago it held a two day charge) this probably won’t be a good option.
For that large an area you will have to do the physical underground fence in my experience. You can rent a machine from a local tool/equipment rental place that you drive along and it buries the wire and covers it back up. Still a bit of a PITA, but less so than digging it by hand!! We did this years ago but then the line got cut when we put in some automatic waterers and now my current band of dogs mostly stick to our property anyway and the neighbors are cool. We are VERY lucky to be backed up to a few hundred acres of woods and ravines that are undeveloped, so they can explore back there with abandon if they choose to do so, without disturbing anyone. We have considered moving farther south in the future and I will definitely do the underground/electronic fence again if we do. Good luck!
