Grain bag bugs

Opened a bag of TC Senior and noticed a little green inchworm looking thing in there (but not an inchworm.)

What are these things? I moved the grain around a bunch and saw another one. Do I return it? Or are a couple teeny little things like this to be expected in a bag here and there? Don’t want to be unreasonable.

Return it. Pantry moths maybe.

Bummer. Thanks!

Return it, or call Triple Crown’s customer service; they will usually send you a coupon for a replacement bag.

If you dumped this feed into a bin or barrel, I would also recommend thoroughly cleaning and drying the container before putting more feed into it, to make sure there aren’t any smaller insect larvae still in there that you didn’t notice.

Oh blech! Makes me wonder if I ever fed my horses bugs. I might have missed seeing something that small. Especially feeding in the dark as I’ve had to do in the past.

You have the video, I’d send a copy to the feed company but I’d also take the bag back.

I have no doubt that our horses eat lots of bugs while outside every day.

No worries.

I just realized few days ago I’ve been feeding very moldy Standlee Tim/Alf cubes from Tractor Supply. Scooping in a dark room happens.

That’s a big reason to buy and only use bags of feed with recent manufacturing dates on them. The eggs will not have hatched yet.

I have inadvertently bought old bags of feed that had swarms of mature moths come flying out when they were opened.

Yeh, not only return it but if you buy more bags of grain from TSC, take a min to stare at the bag in the store to make sure the ‘dust’ on the bags (grain mites) aren’t crawling around on the bags. Every time I go in my local TSC, I always see them on the bags.

if buying grain at Tractor Supply LEARN how to read the products production date coding, I have seen feed there that should have been removed just by being outdated

The TC where I used to buy feed from has a terrible mite problem. It’s so bad there is a distinctive odor around the feed area and a “dust” from the mites coating the outsides of the bags. If you wipe a hand on some of the bags you can see the little boogers walking around. Management shrugged and said that they sprayed the warehouse.

I asked if all the animal feed and hay was in there when they sprayed. The manager got a haunted look and declined to answer. That’s the last time I bought anything that involved food for man or beast from that store. Blech.

Returned to the store with no issue. It’s a local farm store and they were great about swapping the bag. New bag has no friends that I could see
