I am starting to give my mare who is 3 yr old grain to fill any nutrients that she isn’t getting from grass. There are so many brands and mixtures it’s hard to choose. What would you recommend either pre mixed or individual ingredients and brands to use that have been good?
Ration balancer? I feed my 3yo TC 30% supplement.
How much work is she in and is she a good weight now?
I gave my 3 yo, who was in light, but steady work, good weight and no forage available (Southern CA - it is what it is), 50:50 alfalfa and bermuda hay. He also gets approximately 0.5 lb (unsoaked weight) beet pulp pellets, soaked, 0.5 lb timothy pellets and 0.5 lb Triple Crown 30% Ration Balancer. He also gets a biotin supplement with Cu, Zn, methionine and lysine for hooves and whole flax seed for omega 3s.
The beet pulp (no molasses added) is good for the GI in our sandy environment and provides calories, without getting them hot. The timothy pellets supplement the available hay and the TC RB covers vitamins and minerals. As his work load is increasing this year I am considering putting him on 1lb TC lite and upping the BP if he needs more calories.
She is in good weight but just would like to add muscle and development and her forage isn’t really the best. I was thinking of just some pre made grain like purina or something like that. I may have to look at this ration balancer though
